keyboard's USB

hey, I have to get a new keyboard, and I'm wondering if I should get the keyboard that has 2 USB in it. is that good?, cause I need more USB ports anyways.

makes sense to me. just remember that it will be difficult to use a usb keyboard in dos mode or in safe mode, so it will be handy to have an old ps2 one laying around as well.

Some motherboard BIOSes have low-level USB mouse and keyboard translation built in that will send the PS/2 keyboard/mouse inputs to the OS.

i have one of those mobos =)

those 2 usb ports would be bus powered, which is not good for devices that are not self powered.

I like the Microsoft Internet Keyboard Pro, partly because of the USB ports, but mostly because of the other features, such as handy buttons for volume control and for email and for the web.

Depending on your physical setup, you may or may not find the USB ports handy. e.g. I have a tray to slide my keyboard under my desk, do I don't plug anything into the keyboard permanently. I just use it for things I plug and unplug on a short-term basis. And, the keyboard hub is unpowered, which limits the range of devices you can plug into it.

The MS Keyboard has both USB and regular keyboard connectors, so you won't have to worry about whether or not it will work in Safe mode or in Dos.

I would agree with RW. I have a Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro, and it is really nice 🙂

Most new motherboards will emulate PS/2 inputs for USB keyboards and mice so that older OSes can use them. Even some older motherboards (like my friend's Slot 1 Intel 440BX mobo) can do it. It all depends on your BIOS.

Bad thing I have with usb keyboard most of them dont meet some of the power out requiments to use printers/scanner/cameras .. just good for mice.

I just got the MS Internet Keyboard Pro and as others have said, I like it alot. However I do not use, probably never will, the USB ports on the back of it. Instead I have a USB hub I got from Sam's for about $20.00. It has AC power and works great.

BTW the keyboard hooks up to the ps2 port as well as a USB port (at the same time). So I *guess* it will work in DOS. The USB is probably only if you are gonna use the ports on the back.

Mine works ok in those modes,it depends on the Motherboad BIOS USB Legacy support.

🙂

Also, my USB keyboard only has 2 ports on it, which I beleive is typical. So, you'll only gain a net of one port from such a keyboard; assuming the keyboard is plugged directly into the computer, you'll be trading one powered USB port for two unpowered ones. If that is what you need (e.g. you want to plug your USB mouse into the keyboard), then fine. But if you need more than that, a USB hub is probably better and not too expensive.
