I am running windows 8.1 pro and when I lock the computer or it times out and locks sometimes when I return and try to type in my login it doesn't work,no keys are showing up and the enter key does nothing as well and this can be on a combo keyboard/touchpad unit where the touchpad works fine but the keys don't work.
I have checked everything in BIOS and it all looks ok.
Thanks

You can hot plug the USB connector. That somes does the job. For PS2 I believe you have to reboot. The locking process has always been somewhat buggy.

Are you sure the USB port is good? Can you try a powered USB hub connected to the backplane? Do you have another KB to cross check with?

Since this happened on your main PC, why not try the KB on a secondary PC and see if it is the KB or the Main PC that is the problem?

Yes the USB prort is good and yes the KB works on other computers I have tried three different kbs and it doesn't matter which port I connect it to.
I have not tried a hub yet
Thanks for trying to help

This tells me there is nothing wrong with the KB. If the port is good, then that points to a KB driver problem.

Using your mouse, go to Device Manager/Human Interface Device/Keyboard and see if you can get a new driver.

it's not the KB I have tried five different ones when this happens. The mouse works so I know that it isn't locked up.
I have noticed something about it. If my screensaver is on or black screen if I press keys on my KB it works fine however if I use the mouse to get rid of the screensaver at login no KB will work.

What happens if you disable the screen saver? Why is screen saver involved at LOGIN?

I use a screensaver to make me have to login after five minutes of inactivity-keeps the kid from getting on it and installing anything that says download and install for free. Thanks for trying to help me.

Why not use power management to put the monitor to sleep after n minutes? It can require the same procedure for logging in and does not involve a possibly corrupted app, and it saves electricity.

I think that it was Kaspersky internet security.
They told me on the phone that it was incompatible with Malwarebytes so I got a refund and uninstalled it and so far have not had that problem again.

Kaspersky told me on the phone to uninstall Mblam
that they were incompatible and another tech told me the same thing. I told them that I wanted my money back and they gave it.
mblam has saved my ass so many times that I can't count.
I am running Eset now.
