Keyboard1.exe

If you are talking about the win2k sevice install you have to delete the registry entries, then set the service to not start automatically, then restart, then delete it.

I've deleted all the registry entries I could find for setilog and keyboard1... still starts automatically with login. How do I set the service to not start automatically?

Thanks for your help.

start>settings>control pannel>administrative tools>services Then find the keyboard service and set it's startup type to disabled.

It was sucking the power off one of my processors. An entire processor. Figured that wasn't worth it.

That is a problem. You need to be running two versions of SETI to use up the cycles fromt he other processor.

Seriously though......sorry to break it to you but that is how the program is supposed to work. It uses all of your spare CPU cycles. That means that when program needs resources it gets them but when it doesn't SETI gets them. SETI has been known to be a very friendly client with few compatability and resorce problems. You will not experience a slowdown in any programs when running SETI except for slight pauses with Outlook 2000. SEIT doesn't slow up any other programs or other versions of Outlook.

I play games and everything: watch DVD's, real media, win zip, mp3's....no problems at all. Please reconsider your decision.

Yes, my service install isn't a virus or anything. 🙂

It only uses idle CPU time, that's why your computer is running at 100%. Please consider reinstalling SETI! 🙂

The thing is is that keyboard1 was taking an entire processor while SETI wasn't even running. Is that how its supposed to work?

That's a slightly older version of my service install, but I think I remember what the filenames were. I believe the two .exe files were SETILog.exe and Keyboard1.exe. SETILog is what's actually installed as a service. It then starts up the CLI (Keyboard1.exe) as another service, and logs the WU output. So you are correct that SETILog should be getting 0 CPU time, and Keyboard1 should be getting 99%. 🙂

Hoober,
If you used Sukkoi's service install, I believe he renamed the SETI client to keyboard1. So Keyboard1 is actually SETI running, which would explain keyboard1 taking full use of the CPU. Well, at least the "idle" cycles.

If you look at the task manager without keyboard1 running, you will see the "system idle process" taking up most of the CPU cycles. When SETI (or keyboard1) runs, it basically takes the CPU cycles that would go to the system idle process.

Are you running a dual CPU setup?

[edit]
DOH! Sukkoi beat me to it! 😉
[/edit]

Yeah in Suhkoi's new service install setilog is renamed to keyboard.exe and the seti cli is keyboard2.exe. In both instances he renamed the exe files so that users with a bit of knowledge of seti would not turn try to turn it off or complain because wiht their little knowledge they would think it would hurt performance or something. Or he just renamed them so people would know what their computer was doing. but either way for that install keyboard1.exe is the seti cli with a different name.

Glad to know you still still want to run seti I hope this cleared up the confusion.

Yes, it is dual processors. I was confused because it was named Keyboard1 and not SETI like the others... and taking up the idle process on an entire processor. The fact that it is just a renamed SETI clears everything up.

Glad to hear you have sorted this out 🙂

Why don't you run Seti on the other processor as well, that way you will move up in the ranks a little quicker 😉 and help the TeAm as well at the same time 🙂

ConfusedBW

Quick note to Baldy18,

SETI does interfere with some other programs. I had to remove it from the 2 office PCs this week because it causes a substantial slowdown in Corel 8. The times needed to bring up a file went from a second or so to 5-8 seconds which was enough to have the assistants complaining. 🙁

As soon as Seti was disabled all was fine.

I turn SETI off whilest gaming. Most games suck up a ton of cpu usage anyway and SETI causes a loss of fps....I tested it. You might as well shut SETI down for gaming IMO.

I don't use Corel 8 and haven't noticed any slowdowns in unreal but thanks for the info. The Outlook issue was teh only one that I had heard of specifically although I knew there were a few others.

So Hoober do you want me to tell you how to get SETI running on both processors?

Also, are you on Team AnandTech? I don't recognize your name. 😱

Sukhoi

It was running on both processors... well, at least I thought it was. And yes, I am a member. Have been so for a while now. Somewhere around 750WU's now.

Unless you are running two instances of the cli it isn't running on both processors since the client isn't SMP optimized.

Do you remember exactly which install of mine you used? I have two. The normal one for single CPU setups (I think you installed this one). Then I have the multi-CPU install. If you used the multi-CPU install you should I believe have a Keyboard1 and a Keyboard 2 running.

If you don't, first uninstall the service like was stated above. Then go to my help thread (in my sig) and DL the first two parts of my multi-CPU install, and install them. 🙂 That'll use both processors.

If you don't need SETI to be installed as a service, I would suggest using SETI Driver. You can set the # of processes to 2 so it'll use both CPUs, and it will also cache WUs.
