Keyboard will not function (Win XP Home)

This is an obscure problem, I am trying to fix a friends computer... (Running Windows XP Home)

There are two user accounts...

Selecting the first user account (my friend), requires a password... The keyboard functions and allows you to enter the user-password for the account. However once logged into the desktop area I lose all keyboard functionality. I have complete control via mouse, though...

You can hear, coming from the box, presumably the motherboard a ticking/clicking/beep errornous type sound. Almost like the sound you receive when your computer freezes and you hold down a key on your keyboard, however it's not as -loud- as that.

After rebooting, I entered safe mode...

In safe mode the keyboard works fine, so does the mouse.

I created a new account, and rebooted back into normal mode logging into this new account that I have created. The keyboard works and so does the mouse.

So of course this would indicate there is something wrong with my friends user account. But, what? I have had no luck trying to solve the whilst logged onto his account, only with mouse functionality. I am unaware what could be conflicing or causing this.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

*note* the keyboard is fine, it works under a newly created account...

I realise removing my friends account would solve the problem, but I would rather find the actual problem incase the confliction happens again..

All thoughts appreciated?

regards.
