have had friends online stating its possible to use a USB keyboard/mouse on the PS3 when it comes to gaming.

DAMN that would be great if it could, especially on first person shooters.

Anyone care to share their thoughts regarding the usage of a keyboard/mouse for gaming on a console?

It's possible, Microsoft and Sony just don't seem too interested in implementing (it could also cause multiplayer balance issues in FPS, KB/M players would rule supreme), UT3 for the PS3 is the only game to support a mouse/keyboard on current consoles.

I doubt Civ Rev supports a mouse/keyboard, the game is specifically designed to work on consoles and controlling the game is actually quite easy (Civ Rev is NOTHING like Civ IV), I have tried the 360 version and I own the DS version (same gameplay and content, downgraded graphics and audio, no civilopedia) and stylus control (similar to mouse) is really unintuitive.

I know MS prohibits it because they don't want the consoles to seem to computer-y.

Sony permits it because they want the PS3 to be computer-y to dodge an EU tax on game consoles... interesting difference in approaches.

If these companies (Microsoft especially) are going to be so set on bringing RTS and refining the FPS genre on their consoles they should really allow for a mouse/keyboard, I know some people like FPS better on gamepads because they can be more comfortable but once you get used to FPS on computers with a nice set of hotkeys and a precise mouse, it's hard to go back to a console shooter with auto-aim and a bunch of other aids.

I'm not even going to argue about RTS like Command & Conquer 3 and Red Alert 3 which are available on Xbox360, anyone who thinks these games are better or even the same with a gamepad than a with a mouse/keyboard should be seriously smacked for their horrible taste in games.

EndWar works really nicely with just the gamepad and voice commands. Albeit, it is not the most complex of RTS games, but I think that the technology is proven now.

Same with Halo Wars. All the "hands-on" previews from the E3 demo spoke well of how the controls did for a console RTS. It isn't so much about "it can't be done" than it is "how do we make it work". This is the first console generation where they've really been putting an effort into it.

I know theres a third party adapter for ps3 that allows you to use a keyboard and mouse in any game, but the thing is pretty pricey at the $90ish range.

Do you really think that's the only reason? It seems like a lot of extra money wasted just to avoid a tax in a region that isn't their best seller...

I think Sony wants the PS3 to be the center of your media center. I think the EU tax was only a secondary concern, if not coincidental.

I still have serious doubts about it being able to match up to KB/M. Playing FPS games on a controller is one thing, but most RTS games require by nature the fast and precise movement of the mouse along with multiple keyboard commands. There are still certain FPS games that are nearly impossible to play on a controller, for example fast paced games like Unreal or Quake. In Unreal Tournament on the PS3 Epic slowed down the game substantially to compensate for this.

I think you're confusing "the RTS genre requires a KB+M" and "current RTS games require a KB+M, because they're built around them".

The thing is, the RTS genre works better on the PC, doesn't mean it can't work on a console but I doubt anyone will be playing Halo Wars when they could be playing Starcraft II.

Same with FPS but that's another story.

EXACTLY, console games should be kept separate from PC ones.

Try telling Microsoft and Sony that though.

If you want to use a keyboard and mouse, play on your PC. I really hope the day never comes when keyboard and mouse are permitted in all games (especially FPSes). I want to use a gamepad, and I like to be competitive.

That's about it. If a game allowed both to play against each other then the console market wouldn't buy the games as it would not be fun.

That's death to the game maker.
