Keyboard LED and MS Mouse LED

I want to replace the LEDs on my MS Internet keyboard with blue ones. I found an article showing how to do the mod but it doesnt list the specs on the LEDs other then they are 3mm. Anyone who has done this mod what are the electrical specs (watts, brightness etc) on the LEDs you used. Where did you get them Radio Shack or ?

Also I found an article on modding the Red LEDs in a Logitech Optical mouse. I want to do the same thing to my MS Optical mouse. Anyone done this to an MS Optical. If so what LEDs did you use for this mod?

And....one last thing, I want to change the LEDs on my Lian Li case to blue. The power light is blue but it isnt very bright. I want to put a brighter light in the power light and change out the red HDD LED.

If you used resistors on any of the above operations what are the specs. If you have any guides for these operations being done on MS Internet Keyboard or MS optical mouse please post them.

Thanks for the help

The only light I can give any kind of advice on is the blue case light. I have found that this is an issue with some motherboards not putting out enough power to fully illuminate the blue LEDs (My Soyo KT333 Ulta was dim, my Abit KR7A-R is very bright). I doubt the issue is with a dim LED (as Lian Li case LEDs that I have seen are usually very bright). Sorry I can't be of help otherwise. <aybe try seeing if the HDD will better power the blue LED? I might be wrong and you may have a dim LED, but try and check before buying a new one and getting frustrated.

The hard drive light is super bright and can be seen across the room. The Power light can be seen if youre looking straight at it.

Here's an LED Resistor Calculator. Not all LEDs are shaped the same. The ones in your case and mouse is probably round dome shaped, while the ones in your keyboard is probably rectangular. For all the different types check out E-LED. You can get LEDs from Radio Shack, but it's a rip. If you are a student, go check out your college's ECE department store, they usually carry a different types of electronics for cheap. Otherwise, exabyte is the cheapest online LED store. I just bought my resistors at Radio Shack.

Btw, a multimeter is required for this so that you can check the voltages in the mouse and keyboard. Also you would need a soldier gun and maybe a soldier remover.

I am familiar with a voltmeter, thank god for High School electronics (although it was 18 years ago LOL) but how do ya check the voltages, just have the mouse/keyboard plugged in and the puter running?

Thanks for the help

OK, sorry for being kinda clueless but...

Do you test the voltage while the LED is still in the keyboard and plugged in/running or do you test it while it is out of the keyboard ?

Thanks

Uh, an LED is just a diode, so yes, test the voltages while it is plugged in. You should just test and find out the voltages this weekend, find and purchase the necessary items early next week, and do the actual mod next weekend.

This is just a wild guess, but probably the LEDs you find in your keyboard and mouse uses the same volts as more powerful ones. In that case, it would be a simple LED switch. But if they use less volts, you would need to also replace the resistor in series with the existing LED (if there is an resistor, if there isn't, you should call it quits unless you know a lot about electronics)

I've changed out the LEDs on my Keyboard and mouse and it's very simple. You don't have to use any resistors or anything just get your T1 (or 3mm) leds for the keyboard, and T1 3/4 (or 5mm) for the Optical mouse. You may want to get an LED with a high brightness like 3500mcd or higher for the mouse, it'll track much better.

All you have to do is de-solder the current ones and solder in the new ones, just make sure you get the polarity correct on the LED otherwise it won't work.
