Keyboard layout: When did it officially change?

I have been looking for a new keyboard and it looks like all the new keyboards have changed the layout for the DEL, END, HOME, INS, PUP, PDOWN keys. WHY? I use these heavily and find it annoying. It is vertical now instead of horizontal and the DEL key is huge.

Both Microsoft and Logitech are now like this. When did it change?

Mine too.

But it's not terribly new.

I'd guess that a good percentage of people (80%+?) probably don't use any of those keys other than delete. Actually most people probably don't use delete either, they use backspace.

the bigger question is, why do keyboards still have scroll lock key (and light!)?

So you can perform scroll lock. Duh!

And laptops are when it changed.

Im not talking about laptops just regular keyboards. There is no consistency laptop keyboards between laptop makers/brands. They are all different.

I know. But that's when the standard 101 layout changed.

Here it's...

Print Screen SysRq | Scroll Lock | Pause Break
Insert | Home | Page Up
Delete | End | Page Down

Laptops have been around for years. The change he is talking about is apparently pretty recent.

You're too young to remeber. But there was a time when all keyboards were the same.

I noticed that on my new(ish) keyboard/mouse set... it's the newer "comfort curve" design, but that shouldn't change the layout of those keys...

honestly, i haven't noticed the lack/movement of the insert key until it was mentioned here

I'm not too young to remember, but that's beside the point. The OP is asking about a specific, recent change to keyboard layouts, which has nothing to do with laptops.
