keyboard and mouse

First gaming pc buyer (Maingear Vybe) and have been researching keyboards and mice. I wam wondering if both a gaming keyboard and gaming mouse are needed. If only one is necessary which would be best? I have always been a console player and never played on a pc. I need all the help I can get.

Depends on what you like.

I still use an old Microsoft natural 4000 keyboard and a Logitech trackball to game myself.

never used a pc for gaming. what are the advantages of gaming hardware vs standard keyboard and mouse?

No idea like I said I never use gaming stuff for the most part.

I did used to use a G15 logitech second keyboard for macros, but dont even have it hooked up these days.

A gaming mouse will usually have better tracking, better shape, different surfaces, macro keys and at the high end adjustable weights. Gaming keyboards tend to have macros, backlighting and at the high end mechanical switches. I personally use he deathaddeer 2013 and the corsair vengeance k95. I absolutely love my deathadder, truly awesome mouse. I really like my k95 but I don't find it as useful.

It's very hard to recommend the right mouse because it's such a personal piece of hardware. Many enthusiast PC gamers including myself go through a lot of different mice to find one that works best, but it may not be the same that works best for someone else. There are so many variables, including grip style, hand size, personal preference, mouse sensitivity.

"Gaming grade" keyboard and mouse are by no means necessary, you can get by with a good old office keyboard+mouse combo as well. But the user experience with a gaming keyboard and mouse is simply better, even for someone new to PC gaming.

What kind of games do you play? Some peripherals are better for specific game genres, particularly MMO's versus FPS games
