My mouse and keyboard is detected fine during the boot process, but when I get to the log in screen, it appears that all my usb ports stop working. I cant move my mouse or keyboard? any ideas?

Have you tried unplugging and replugging, and waiting approx 3 minutes?

OTOH, if your light on your optical mouse goes out, when Windows boots, and never comes back on, then you probably do have some issue with your USB drivers.

You don't happen to have a spare PS/2 keyboard to plug in just to get into windows for basic troubleshooting?

no ps/2 ports, tried multiple keyboards and mice. When then windows boot splash screen loads up all my usb ports seem to work, then about halfway through they all shut off.

Crap, man, this has happened to me before and somewhat recently and I can't remember for the life of me what I ended up doing to fix it. I think I was only dealing with it with my mouse, though, since I'm using a PS/2 keyboard. I just logged in and shortcutted my way around. I'll try to remember what ended up being the problem.

Did you try messing with the USB settings in the BIOS? Turn on/off legacy support? Set any overclocking you're doing back to stock settings?

It was happening to me with the mouse on my GA-P35-DS3R and what I did was go into the BIOS and toggle the USB mouse setting to disabled, saved, went back into the BIOS and toggled back to Enabled.

Try different USB ports.
Boot a LiveCD to confirm it isn't a hardware issue.
Look for updated BIOS and drivers for your motherboard.
Unplug all other peripherals except monitor, keyboard, mouse.

See, the mouse and keyboard/all other usb devices work fine during bios. They also work during windows cd/recovery mood. But during the boot splash, they suddenly just turn off. My computer is an Dell e510, and this problem just started occuring.

Now see, that info helps a lot. Nobody knew if it had ever worked correctly, but now we do know. My guess would be that a Windows update has caused a conflict somewhere.

If possible do a system restore to the latest restore point that you know it was working. Afterwards you can apply updates one at a time until you figure out what "broke" the system, and find a solution for that.

Have you tried to "repair an existing installation" after booting the CD? You won't lose any installed programs or settings. . .

Im on vista (just FYI) should I go about and try repairing an existing installation? I mean my computer is already usless it wont hurt to try?

Have you tried safe mode? Also if you don't have to enter a password to get to the OS does the system recognize other USB devices like a flash drive?
