Key West, Florida

Don't know anyone who lives there, but I've been a bunch of times 🙂

My brother-in-law lives in Key West and my wife and I go down there quite a bit. There is no such thing in Key West as good and cheap. If you want cheap you won't get good. Even a lot of the expensive places are just so-so.

Me, too! Long live the Conch Republic!

Lol, for really cheap, there's a youth hostel, but it's a pit.

There are a ton of different, small "inns" carved out of nice old houses, though.

Probably the cheapest non-skeevy place is the single chain motel (I forget which) which is located at the entrance to the city proper. I suppose Google is your friend here.

Maybe it's not from a chain, but it's on that order of place.

There is a Best Western near the airport that is nice and decently priced. It is across the street from the beach, but the rooms all have screened in patios and the grounds are nice.

I hate the place. I've been there several times (most recently a 1-month stint there in may for work). The island is dirty, the people who live there are dirty, and the weather is god-awful in the spring/summer/fall. It was so hot and humid in may, I did everything I could to stay in my hotel room.

It might be fun if you like to get sloppy drunk with a bunch of gay people though. I could see Duval St. being a fun place if you are between 21-25 years old, and it was winter time.

I can give you restaurant recommendations if you want. Also, DON'T stay at cheap hotels there. They are dirty and roach infested.

I would recommend: Hyatt (there are 2 or 3 on the island), The Casa Marina, The Reach, or The Crowne Plaza. I have stayed in all of those, and they are pretty nice. Anything cheaper than that is going to be a dirty, roach infested dive.

The Cuban Club should be on the short list.

I also agree with your assessment, except, there are 3 reasons outside of work to be there. None of that list being "partying with gay people" 😉 Awesome fishing, diving, snorkeling, if not planning on those the entire time, there is zero reason to visit.

True, I didn't think of diving. All the times I have gone diving and fishing down there it has been off of Key Largo (I think).

That is also a good point, you don't have to make it to Key West to do most everything worth doing in the Keys. I suppose if you have never been, you can take a pic of yourselves at the Southernmost point in the U.S.?

I remember as a child, me pop told us to swim out in our snorkeling gear, so we did. He shouts out "You just left the Southernmost point of the U.S.! The 3 of us were like "Meh" "Good story, Bro" worthy? 😛

We just went this past weekend, having lived in Ft Lauderdale the past 4 months. I didn't think it was especially dirty, nor were the people. Then again it's off-season and it wasn't very crowded. It was hot as fing balls at the peak of the day, so we did other stuff during that time. There are only a few beaches, and all the public/free ones are nothing special. There is one located in the state park you have to pay ($8.50 for 5 people) to get into, but it is by far the nicest. There is also good snorkeling in this area, better than the other beaches by far anyway.

Overall the beaches aren't anything special and if you just want beach time, you're better served by going to a beach in Miami or Ft Laud. We did a lot of snorkeling which was pretty cool, I had never done that before.

Restaurants seem to be hit or miss. Most of the really good places are also really expensive. Cheeseburgers on Duval St was recommended to us and it was GOOD. But it was also $45 for two burgers, 1 beer + souvenir glass, 1 soda, & giant plate of chili cheese fries. It was damn good food and the service was excellent too. We also found a hole-in-the-wall type place right at the entrance to Key West called Hurricane Joe's I think, based out of a small marina. Good and fairly cheap food there too.

We stayed at the Southwinds Hotel, right next to the Best Western. It was $109/night plus taxes for 4 adults. The room was fine, perfectly clean and had a big sink, microwave, & fridge. We spent little time in the room so no complaints there. Off season the prices are pretty reasonable - that same room costs over $250 in-season.

As others have said, unless you want to fish/dive/scuba, save your money and go elsewhere for cheaper. It is a neat experience, but unless you want to do some of the above you can experience it all in a day trip.

Ok. News flash. The southernmost part of the USA is hot in the summer. Sheesh.

There's much more to do than scuba/fish/snorkel

Tons of amazing restaurants (Marathon has some nice ones)
Fantastic old buildings/architecture/antique shops.
Easy going atmosphere
Mel Fisher maritime museum (Atocha and some other ship artifacts)
Street performers at sunset at Mallory Sq
Dry Tortugas/Fort Jefferson national park
Ernest Hemingway house
and MUCH more.

I will concur - if you are looking for white, sandy beaches - DO NOT go to Key West, do to Destin/Panama City.

I have gone on 1/2 day fishing charters and snorkeling trips - AMAZING, both of them. But there's a lot more to the Keys than "gays" (How stupid of a statement is that?)

I swear by Tripadvisor - I reviewed a few Keys restaurants there too.

Your review may be a little biased. You are a native of Florida and may work for that site...is this true sir?

I completely agree and approve of this post.

I've spent many weekends in the Keys and specifically Key West and there is so much more to do than drink and party and while there is a very large gay community they don't/won't bother you and stick to the one end of Duval street for the most part.

I live in Key Largo and head down to Key West about every month or so to do some diving and drinking. I go to Priceline and bid $110 on a 3-star and every time I get approved for a room at the Sheraton Suites. The rooms are nice, they have a free shuttle over to Duval and it's right across the street from Smathers Beach.

If you looking for a dirt cheap room to bang that tranny you met on Duval St, stop by the Southern Cross, they give you free condoms when you check in.

Hahahaha that is hilarious. We saw this 6-footer that from the back was bangin', but turned around and ruined it when you saw the face 😀

Fat Tuesday's there rocks.

We stayed in Marathon, rented a little cottage/trailer for a week for super cheap. I think it was 600 for the whole week.
