If this is not allowed, please throw me in the water and see if I float 🙂

Trying to fix a bud's box, that he has managed to fubar- he has a ton of stuff on it ( of course) and doesn't want to lose it, however he NEVER does back-ups, and I'm the lucky guy trying to fix it.

Symptoms: won't boot all the way into Windows, he claims he tried to load SP-2 and it hung, now he has problems.
I have tried last known good config, and safe mode- no good.

I have tried to do a "repair" by installing windoze over the top of his OS: however ( of course) he can't find the original disk from 2 years ago, and as his install is looking for the original key, the couple I have won't work.
I have tried several key finder programs , but none work in DOS.
Any suggestions , besides a full re-install?

Put his hard drive in another box, backup the data, have him purchase another copy of XP and make sure he doesn't lose this one.
