Key Press Problem with HP laptop

Hi guys,

I need a little help with my new HP laptop. You see, usually for desktop computers, if you hold down keys (meaning without releasing the keys), Windows will likely recognize a maximum of 4 or 5 keys being held down. Subsequent key holds will not be recognized by Windows.

However, currently, my laptop can only have 2 keys held down simultaneously. Further key holdings will not be recognized by Windows. I realized this when playing games. And yes, it happens to every single game I played. For example, when I played a fighting game, I cannot do things like holding down both the up and front arrow keys and press another key (e.g an attack key) at the same time. Once 2 keys are held down, subsequent key presses/holds will not be recognized until at least one of them is released.

Does anybody know how to solve this problem? I e-mailed HP, and I must say, they are not very helpful when customers have a problem.

PS: I have upgraded the BIOS to the latest version, and my Windows XP has been updated fully (with Service Pack 2 and all other security updates).

You might try searching here. I have a vague recollection of seeing posts about complaints regarding this. If I'm correct, ain't a thing which can be done IIRC

Nothing can be done except buying a new USB keyboard and plug into my laptop?

Oh my it certainly looks lke I will never trust HP laptops again.

Thanks for the reply. But I can't seem to find any topics related to my issue.

You know, it's hard to say... Here's my experience, I know this may not help you fix your problem, but it might give you some insight into coming up with a workable solution:

It really depends on what I'm running. If I'm running a game or some software (especially N64/SNES emulators) this is a huge problem, because the exact same thing happens to me. Especially if I press the arrow keys (3 or more), it'll cancel all three out and it'll just beep.

But if I'm just sitting in Windows I can press as many keys as I want, and it'll switch between each new key. It's kind of weird...

I've read that the PS/2 keyboards can't send more than 2 signals at a time, but I use a PS/2 keyboard and only get this problem in the above circumstances.

A USB keyboard may help, but I can't promise that it will, you'll just have to experiement and find out.

Wish I could give you a definitive answer - but let us know if you figure it out!
