Hmmm... They're using a D-Link DWL-650 802.11b LAN card. I didn't try walking too far away from the coffee shop (Second Cup in Toronto) because they were a bit worried about me taking the card, but it does work part way up the block. It seems like they have no security on the system.

I gotta get me one of these.
 
No I had to give it back. 🙁

It seems the money is for card rental. Other people just walk in and use their laptops, I'm assuming with wireless LAN cards of their own - no password required. I think I'll just buy one and use their wireless with my coffee on w/e summer mornings. (I wanted to get myself one of these cards anyway.)
