Mitnick laptop for sale on eBay

Notorious computer hacker Kevin Mitnick has put the laptop seized during his 1995 arrest up for sale on eBay.

The venerable Toshiba Satellite T1960CS, 486 laptop was one of two PCs allegedly used by Mitnick to hack into networks of major corporations, including Motorola and Sun Microsystems. It was seized when he was arrested by the FBI on February 15, 1995, in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The laptop became an important part of the Mitnick case before he decided to plead guilty to charges of wire fraud and intercepting communications, as part of a plea bargaining arrangement in 1999. It was recently returned to Mitnick by the FBI.

Forbes reports that some encrypted data has subsequently been wiped from the machine.

If you bid for the laptop (which is still working) you'll get a machine loaded with Windows 95, complete with a 14.4K modem and various documents of authenticity, including FBI evidence bags.

Mitnick is prohibited from using the Internet under the terms of his release. The auction is been conducted for him by his girlfriend and its proceeds will go towards paying off his legal bills.

Although eBay balked at the sale of other notable trinkets - such as his prison ID tag - in 2000, it seems happy enough to carry out the latest sale. Mitnick is forbidden from selling his story until 2007 but selling hardware connected with some of his more infamous exploits is apparently fine.

Bidding for the laptop stands at $9,200 (below its reserve price) with just over four days of bidding yet to go. ®

I wouldn't pay the tiniest fraction of the bid for that. Now if Jason Scott Lee auctions his underwear.... ;)

I dunno, If I had the expendible cash laying around, it might be a pretty cool piece of history to own... for a geek, I guess... :)

he hosted The Screensavers Friday Night and had Steve Wasniak(sp?), the Apple guy, sign it as well. Now it's sure to go for thousands...

I've seen him with several young women. He seemed enthralled by them. But we do have an obsessive gay celebrity that "likes" him.

I wonder if any evidence is still on the laptop. Doubtable, I would think.

I don't think so, it said a fresh copy of Windows 95 was installed on it. Plus, I doubt the FBI would return anything that would allow him or anyone who bought this laptop to have any of the programs or code he used :)

Not for much longer, I think. Hopefully he can make something productive of his life after the ass-raping he was given by the government.

It's too bad that someone formatted the hard drive and installed Windows on it. I'll bet that he had some really cool hacking utilities and interesting confidental data on that thing!

I saw an interview with him the other night and he said the FBI wiped the laptop clean before they gave it back to him.

Wouldn't be weird if someone bought it and hacked into a company causing millions of dollars of damage only to have it taken into FBI custody again?

Lets try to keep this in perspective here people. Kevin Mitnick was a thief. Plain and simple. He got every bit of what he deserved, and imho he got let off easy. He broke into public systems and stole accounts, creditcard numbers and sensitive information for communications equipment. Although clever, Kevin Mitnick is no different than that of a burglar.

Oh, so a thief is not entitled to Constitutional rights? Mitnick was held for almost two years without even a hearing while the FBI looked for something to pin on him. Look up habeus corpus and get back to me.
