....and that lasted about .15 seconds before he decided Linux or something of the like was the only way to go. :D

You don't think he has been using his "girl friend's" computer now for years?

That was before his probation period was over. He is now legally allowed to use a computer or internet enabled device.

Kevin Mitnick was a cracker from the good old days (not really old days). Back in 1995 he was arrested, and held in jail for 5 years until 2000, without bail hearings, or proper trial. He was tried at the end of the five year term, and they (the government) decided he served enough time. He was then put on probation that restricted to not be able to use any internet appliances, or most computer devices. Now he is free.

He's a guy who got screwed by the government to send a message to all future hackers/crackers to give up their evil ways. He was, in my opinion, properly convicted but improperly sentenced.

Ummm... No. He committed real crimes, hacking into major sites, and he got busted. Do the crime. Do the time.

Now, he's done the time, but I'll be more impressed when he posts, here. :)

Of course that was when most of us thought that holding someone without trial indefinitely was a bad thing. Not that's considered old fashioned

How fitting, considering that Windows XP has massive security holes in its Internet connectivity system stuff (I really need to get some caffeine in me).

His hacking tool was the phone, not really computers. People just openly gave him passwords.

The government used him to set an example, his sentance was way too harsh, not to mention the fact that he wasnt even tried until a couple years ago

His book, The Art of Deception is a real interesting read if you're into that kind of stuff. Goes into all sorts of social engineering tactics.

Agreed. Very informative too. First book I've bought in a long time.

If you haven't seen Operation Takedown, you should. I saw a divx copy of it a couple months back. The movie goes into his exploits and how he got caught with the help of Tsutomu Shimomura.
