Kettering University

Anyone with any thoughts/opinions? Anybody actually go to Kettering? I'm looking at their Comp Engineer || Comp. Sci. programs, and they seem pretty good. Would like some more thoughts before I schedule a visit at the University.

If you can get into a school that is as good or better and is located in a nicer community, maybe you will want to think about that. Kettering has a strong engineering and management program and it is well-respected but, well, its located in the middle of Flint, Michigan. Just go visit the campus, you'll know what I mean.

You'll think "WTF is a school with this kind of reputation doing here?"

You may not mind it so much, to each his own. There are a couple Kettering students or graduates who participate on AT Forums. Can't remember their names, though.

I did not attend Kettering, but I am from Flint.

Try Michigan Tech or U of M. Kettering is in a crappy area and you are on and off school while intering somewhere. You can just get a summer internships at other schools and not have to pay for them.

I was accepted into Kettering, but I did not go for the reasons tcsenter has already given.(Plus, I had scholarships elsewhere).

I'm in Canada and I went to Kettering for a tour. It's not bad, they gave me free lunch. I talked to their reps... basically they would give me dollar-for-dollar.. eg if a tuition was $30K USD, it would be $30K CDN. But still way too much for me - I chose the University of Toronto instead. The area around is OK, but I've heard that the whole Flint area isn't that great, and the mayor of Detroit isn't great. But I have relatives from there, so that's what they say. Best of luck to ya.

I currently attend Kettering and I am very happy. It is in the middle of the ghetto, that is true, but it toughens you up. 😀 Kettering is one of the top five schools for undergraduate engineering programs. It's private, small, and lots of fun. The nicest benefit of the school is the co-op terms. For 4 1/2 years you rotate between school and work every 3 months. I cant tell you how much it helps with tuition, experience, and the boredom of typical schools.

While Kettering is unique in that it requires you to do co-ops, it's not alone. Purdue requires the same thing for its engineers and, if you're good about it, you can do the same thing (or better) from almost any school. I go to the University of Illinois and am doing a co-op with Bosch Automotive right now. I'm doing two semesters and a summer with them. I've also already done one summer with General Electric and they want me to come back for another. So, basically, I'm co-oping with two awesome companies and not just one as you do at Kettering.

Sucker. 😉

We dont just to summer internships. We stick around with a company(in a perfet world) for 4 1/2 years. I think that is better than bouncing back and forth. There is only one other school in the ccountry that has the constant revolution between school and work, but i cant think of the name.

I currently go to Kettering (finished my first term a month ago and am on co-op right now). It's a great place to be IMO. I could not have made a better choice. It is a great school, and have met some of the greatest people I know there. And it's small enough that you'll know most of your incoming class in your freshmen year. Beyond 1 or 2 first year classes (Manufacturing engineering and maybe Chem) of 50 students, you'll never see a class of >30 (I don't think).

The school has some outstanding contacts with business world. If a company knows GMI/Kettering, you have instant credibility 9 times out of 10. The co-op's are a great way to help pay for school, many students (myself included) have reasonable hopes of graduating debt-free due to the co-op program. A friend of mine has a job that pays him a good salary ON TOP of paying for his tution, living expenses and school supplies (although it's not common, it does happen). One of the best endorsements is seeing another friend of mine graduate and getting his dream job of building control systems for amusement park attractions down in Florida.

It is in a crappy area (crime is a big problem in the city), but you don't have to leave campus often, I rarely did my first term. And believe me, you won't have time to carouse the streets of Flint after the 3rd week of classes unless you're a genious.

Overall, a nice place with plenty of state funding (brand new Chem/Mech building was opened this summer). I suggest you come to an open house.

I talked with a GMI alumni before I went, and he basically asked me 3 questions:

1. Do you want to be an engineer?
2. Are you sure you want to be an engineer?
3. Are you absolutly positive you want to be an engineer?

If you answered yes to all these, KU is a place you should consider. If you have doubt, KU is probably not the right school. It sucks transferring out (due to the quarter system not equating well with semesters at some schools).

Anyway, good luck hope you come visit.

With respect to Comp Sci., it is a hard program. You better really like it, to come to Kettering for it. Java I was a beast for me (EE major).

Man... I'm having the hardest time picking between MSU Engineering and Kettering...

I mean, I know Kettering is better with out a doubt... but god, that I get the impression (from epinions) that the town is the worst part about it, and that crime is nasty.

Will Kettering give me a huge advantage if I go there instead of MSU?

are you guys even sure you want to be engineeers? i thought i wanted to be an engineer, applied to all hardcore engineering schools, and then realized i might not want to be an engineer... then i got to college, and realized i sure as hell don't want to be an engineer

Yeah, I was going to be in CS or CE at MTU but then I switched to MSU and am going to be an English or Telcom major.

It was one of my safety schools, applied and got in.

But I decided to go to a school someplace a little closer to home.

while I have no doubt that kettering is a good school... are you sure about being "top 5" for undergraduate engineering? That seems a lot higher than what I recall.
