Kerry backers in Portland parted ways on gay marriage

The final precinct figures released by Oregon counties this week reveal a division among Portland area Democrats.

Democratic nominee John Kerry won almost all of the Portland precincts.

But the precinct results show that his backers parted ways on the controversial gay marriage ban.

Many of the voters who brought Kerry his Oregon victory departed from the Democratic orthodoxy and helped Give Measure 36 its winning edge.

The initiative passed in many blue-collar neighborhoods that supported Kerry, like Milwaukie.

But neighborhoods in more affluent suburbs closer to the city were less likely to back Measure 36.

For example, in Portland's Irvington neighborhood, Measure 36 received a timid 19 percent of the vote.

By contrast, it won nearly 70 percent of the vote in a fast-growing neighborhood east of Clackamas Town Center.

Milwaukie? That place is out way out in the 'burbs. I wouldn't describe it as blue collar other then disenfranchised former-logger republicans, like the majority of OR outside of Portland (about the ONLY city in the whole state!) Lets see what the other places like Eugene and Portland itself voted.
