I just bought a Kenwood 52X from someone on his board. It plays CDs fine it seems. I've only had it a few days though. But when I start or reboot my PC the Kenwood drive makes a annoying humming sound on and off around 5 or 6 times atleast before it stops. Is this normal?

I seen the recall on the 40X but not on the 52X from Kenwood.

Thanks!

Read on down for up date

Yup thats what happens on mine too...

I have a 72X in my new system though, and it's never done it. My 72X is actually broken right now, it just crapped out last week. I've been calling and emailing Kenwood every day and no one can seem to return my calls or emails. Anyone know how to get a hold of somebody over there??

I once heard about some deal where if you sent in the 52x to Kenwood with 20 or 25 dollars they'd send a 72x... I looked on thier website though and never found anything, anyone ever hear something similar?

I'm looking at my dead 52x right now... the Kenwood people NEVER return my emails and I am going to have to call. What a waste of time.

I loved the drive until it decided to work at the pace of a 1x cdrom. It makes this clicking noise when it closes and won't read CDRs and RWs. It also took it forever to actually recognize REAL cds.

I'm thinking about going to a SCSI Tru52x, but I don't want ot have to do this RMA again. Anyone have one?

Oh and yes, if you tell them you want a 72x you have to give them a credit card number and they will ship it to you while you ship your 52 to them. That was back in may when the actually responded to one of my many emails.

I wish the 52X drives were being recalled too, so I could send this one back. Who started the 52X rumor anyways! :| Its only the 40X Drives that I seen.

Let me know if thats true, that would be cool. But its hard to believe. :)

Kenwood tech support finally called me today at work!
You can upgrade from a 52X to a NEW 72X CD-Rom drive for $32.47 with shipping. So you can upgrade for a small fee. My 52X kenwood Drive was getting in bad shape, so to me it was worth the upgrade for a new faster one.

Here the e-mail they sent me after the call.

Your RMA number is RMA# SR0-####-00

Please send your drive to the following address:

Kenwood Technologies
RMA# SR0-####-00
1701 Junction Court #100
San Jose, CA 95112
(408) 467-7900

Please only send the drive and not the cables, screws, etc.

We will send the 72X, as soon as accounting processes your CC.

Regards,

RMA Dept., Kenwood Technologies

Thanks,
Frosty for the upgrade tip! :)

BuckMaster: Does that apply to everyone who owns a 52x or is it only for you?

My 52x sh|t out on me a while back but I voided the warranty. Think they'd still take it back for a replacement?

LXi,

When I called the guy the only thing he asked for was the model of the 52X Kenwood CD-Rom and the serial number. Model for the 52X is UCR412. I told him I was at work and didnt have the serial number with me for the drive. He said dont worry about it. The only thing I needed to send back was JUST the drive. I didnt even have to have the box or reciept! This applies to anyone he told me that wanted to upgrade from a Kenwood 52X to a 72X CD-Rom.
So to answer your question YES :) If you want I can keep you posted on this. When my CC gets charged and the CD-Rom comes in I then can varify it 100%. But so far from what the guys told me everything should go threw with out a problem. He told me they should ship out my 72X Monday. I'm hoping to get a tracking number when shipped. They only have one person at tech support!! So keep calling and leave a number it took them 2 days to finally call me back. So keep calling and leave messages and stay by the phone what ever you do :) It may be a hassle for some but I gave them my work number and Im always in my office all day.

Rotax,

You can send your drive back and take a chance. You wont have a problem sending it back, and will only charge you $32.47. But if you dont send your old 52X drive back before so many days they will tack the remaining full price of the 72X. IF they see you opened the drive after they recieve it they still might added the full price of the 72X since you voided the warrenty. You could just take your chances, or ask about it when calling them. Myself dont think they would say anything unless it looks real obvious you trashed it by taking it apart.

Good Luck!

Since you are on the subject of the Kenwood 52X CD-ROM drives- My drive refuses to read ANY of my 80 Minute CDRs, but reads all of the 74 minute CDRs just fine. Is this a limitation of the drive (do they all do it) or is my drive hosed up? Thanks for any info. I will likely return it for the 72X, because this is really annoying.
