Kenwood True-X Drives

I'm putting one of these into my system after not having one for years. ive seen some issues around the internet about it working with 2k/XP, updating the firmware, and having it set to specific master/slave/DMA settings. is anyone using one in an XP environment that has any tips? I dont think its nothing I wont be able to handle, but im hoping to make it as painless as possible. Thanks!

I had one when they first came out back around 1998 or 1999, and I didn't have any problems with it back then in Win98. It was extremely fast, but it wasn't the best drive for reading CD-Rs.

I didn't konw there was a problem with the TrueX drives and W2K/XP, but I'd just follow what you've read so far, and you'll probably be OK.

Well, the drives just -in general- have problems. I always had a rough time, especially with burned media... on my 52x kenwood anyway.

And, it wasn't limited to 2k or XP, I used the drive in a Mac as well and had the same issues. I recommend binning it and getting something else.

well, the main purpose of this drive was to install games that take advantage of 5 CDROMS, and whatnot. i was planning on using my dvd burner as my recorded media drive, or the other burner i have in there. i just remember the speed being awesome, and for cheap, i managed to pick one up, so i figured, why not?

I have a True-X 52X running in XP, still running fast and true. I had to upgrade the bios in 2000 to V501_412.zen tho in order to fix some issues. Do a search for UCR-412 reference the Kenwood 52X, if that is in fact your drive. PM me with your e-mail addy if you can't find it, I still have the file on disk.
