But yes if you do have a 52x or a 72x go and get the Firmware updates for them as they help a lot, as does updating the BIOS for a motherboard and Fireware on a CR-Writer

I just bought the TEAC CD532S (32X SCSI). I plan to update the firmware and run the extra expansion utility. Anyone care to share what settings I should use with the utility, particulary Sleep Mode Time and DAE Speed? Thanks!

MSU, to test you DAE capabilities, download the software on this page:
CDSpeed

Do tests on pristine audio CD's, and also on smudged or scratched ones, and see what kind of error hits you get at different speeds. On my Teac 32X IDE drive, I decided to leave it at 10X DAE.

To those people looking for a cheap, good CD-ROM, check out the same site for comparative tests. The Afreey 56X & the Teac 40X would be my choices for "cheap but good."

Marlin1975: is the 40x40 drive sold as a Kenwood 40x40? Or as a Hi-Val 40x40 or whatever?

cremefilled,

Thanks for the link and suggestions. The readme file for the expansion utility has this section:

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [How to Edit the File] -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

The contents of the Teac5324.ini file are shown below:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Config]
Comment 532=532EB CD-DA Speed=x4:4(Default),x16:16,x32:32 <-- Comment string
Comment 532=532S/E/EA CD-DA Speed=x4:4(Default),x16:16,x32:32 <-- Comment string
Comment 524=524EA CD-DA Speed=x4:4(Default),x16:16,x24:24 <-- Comment string
CD-DA Speed=4 <--- Read CD-DA Speed setting parameter
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please input a Read CD-DA Speed value you want in the right side of the
above CD-DA Speed= line to overwrite and save.
If you do not input anything, the default read speed of each model will be
set.
For example, to set the Read CD-DA Speed to x16...

CD-DA Speed=16

Read CD-DA Speed values supported by each model are as follows:
CD-532EB : x4, x10, x32
CD-532EA/E/S : x4, x16, x32
CD-524EA : x4, x16, x24

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Is this the same as the DAE speed? If not, where do I change that? If so, I was thinking the only choices were 4, 16, and 32. But you say you are using 10? Thanks.

I've got the 532EB drive, not the one you have. You can leave the drive at 32X enabled, but then select 4X (or whatever) read-speed manually in your copying software for any questionable master CD's (scratched, etc.).

I have this drive also, it really sucks at reading CDRs! I have a little HP 8110i burner which is 24X and it reads burned CDs faster than than my 62X Kenwood. I would recommend this to anyone that does not have any CDRs. It would awesome with CDs that are not CDRs!

Just my 2 cents...

Go to Kenwood.com if you have that drive :)
