Kenwood IDE drive on ATA 66 with Hard Drive

I have a Kenwood IDE CDROM that I want to add to my Athlon 800 K7V system. Only thing is my only free IDE spot is SLAVE on my ATA66 channel.

My 30 gig ATA 66 Maxtor is hooked up as master on that channel.

Would installing the CDROM on the same channel as the hard drive slow the hard drive down?

Possibly, but not a very noticeable amount if DMA is enabled on the Kenwood. If you're using both drives at the same time then it may slow down considerably.

It'll only be slower if you're using the 2 drives at the same time (for example installing software from the Kenwood to the HD). The HD will still run ATA66 though.

sounds like anyway I go I will be slowing my system down.

The main reason I want to use this drive is to rip/record audio/mp3's

my Creative 12X DVD will not keep up with my Plextor 12/10/32A CDRW.

However my Creative 12x is detected in the bios as a UDMA 33 device.
Would I be better off setting the Creative 12x as a slave to the hard drive and then putting the Kenwood as a Slave to the CDRW for audio purposes?

There is a good chance the Creative drive will work fine w/ the Plextor if they are on separate ide channels. When they are hooked to the same cable, only one device can communicate at a time. When they are separated, the Creative is able to send data while the Plextor receives. There is no switching back and forth on the same cable.

thanks for the help.

glad to know that it will only slow down the hard drive if the CDROM and the HD are used at the same time. :)
