I know flesh eating disease is nothing new, but this one takes the cake as far as the worst one I've personally read about.
The story is quoted below from my towns local news website. Just reading it makes me want to vomit. They showed the "pimple" that started it all on the news, poor guy, it turns my stomach just thinking about it....
Kelowna Man Gets Flesh Eating Disease
A Kelowna man has been diagnosed with 'flesh eating disease' and has lived to tell about it.
Rob White's traumatic experience started last week when he squeezed a pimple on his knee and another in his scrotum area. Hours later, he went into shock and was approaching death.
"My kidneys shut down and the ambulance got me to the hospital where the doctors told me I had flesh eating disease," says White.
He says the disease had eaten away part of his scrotum and leg in less than two hours after falling ill.
"Just touching the wound left burn marks on my fingers -- it was incredible how strong that stuff was."
White says doctors informed him the prognosis was not looking good.
"The doctor was quite blunt about it. He said: Rob, you're probably going to lose everything in the scrotum area, but we'll try to save what we can."
At that point White thought he was going to die.
"The doctors told me I was 1.5 hours away from dying ? I was scared.?
White can't be sure how he got the disease but suspects it has to do with his weakened immune system. He suffers from severe arthritis and treats it with steroids. White is also a self-confessed crack addict, but is trying to kick the habit.
He says his brush with death will help him do that.
"No more crack. That's it. I'm done."
White adds that he credits staff at KGH for saving his life.
"They're angels as far as I'm concerned."
White is 53.
