Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards has advised young people to "lay off the dope" in an interview with monthly magazine Uncut.

The 64-year-old, who famously claimed to have snorted his father's ashes - but later denied it, revealed what his message would be to anyone using drugs.

"Give it up, it ain't really worth it. I know the fascination, but it ain't worth it," he said.

He also branded bandmate Sir Mick Jagger a "power freak".

'Vain bloke'

"Mick's a maniac. He can't get up in the morning without knowing immediately who he's going to call," he said.

"Meanwhile, I just go 'Thank God I'm awake' and wait for three or four hours before I do anything. (Queasy: Sadly, I do almost the same thing and I've never done drugs and don't really drink.)

"He is a power freak and there's nothing we can do about it. I don't want to do anything about it. It doesn't make any difference to what we do," he added.

When asked about Jagger's on stage persona he said: "Excuse me while I laugh. He's a bit vain, let's put it like that."

"We want a vain bloke up there, don't we? Meanwhile, the band can go to work. Vanity will not carry a band. But a band can carry vanity."

The performer, who is currently promoting Shine A Light, a Martin Scorsese documentary about the Stones, also revealed he does not listen to contemporary music and thinks CDs sound "tinny".

"I was reading an interview with Keith Richards in a magazine and in the interview Keith Richards intimated that kids should not do drugs. Keith Richards! Says that kids should not do drugs! Keith, we can't do any more drugs because you already fucking did them all, alright! There's none left! We have to wait 'till you die and smoke your ashes! Jesus Christ! Talk about the pot and the fuckin' kettle." - Denis Leary

Lay off the guy! It's like a porn star saying "Don't go into porn!" He knows what happens when people abuse drugs and doesn't want anyone else to go through that. That's all.

Just what I was thinking. He's the poster child for the anti-drug campaign.

The reality is, Keith has been almost completely clean from drugs (other than booze) since his 1970's bust in Canada. Unless you count his snorting his father's ashes last year (R.I.P., Bert). :D

As for his wrinkly/tattered appearance, that is mainly due to his near-constant smoking (of Marlboros).

..his appearance is worrysome. He's looking like Gary Oldman in the movie, "Bram Stokes Dracula". Amazing similarity .

Apparently high fashion house Louis Vuitton is not too concerned about Keef's appearance ... he was tapped earlier today to be the new "face" of a major Louis Vuitton ad campaign.

"Some journeys cannot be put into words. New York. 3 am. Blues in C."

I think he is referring to a major on-going debate in the industry about how music is produced these days re: jacking the "gain".

I know.... well, it's more than the gain. it's the sterility of audio produced on the optical format. It's really the audio in its most refined form (and audio these days is also mastered differently)... versus audio produced in the 60s was produced to sound the best they could on records, and records naturally produced a 'warmer' sound, a nature of the medium.

There's something to be said for "Don't do drugs or you'll look like Keith Richards." But the flipside of that argument is "Don't do drugs or you will be a multimillionaire rock star who will get to have sex with thousands of 18 year old girls for the rest of your life." Which just isn't a convincing argument to me.... That and Keith Richards will never die. He's done so many drugs, it's killed every living cell in his body. There's nothing natural left to die. He's like a walking doll. Terrifying.
