So the New York Post made a tasteless remark. At least it didn't get anyone killed which is more than the hacks at MSNBC can say about the stories they distribute.

You must work for Fox, you get confused on facts too. Newsweek did not make up the story on the Koran, the published it with a single source. It ended up being true, but they could not verify it at the time of the violence.

Text

From Washington Post (also operated by the same folks as Newsweek and MSNBC, so they're talking about themselves here):

Newsweek apologized yesterday for an inaccurate report on the treatment of detainees that triggered several days of rioting in Afghanistan and other countries in which at least 15 people died.

Editor Mark Whitaker expressed regret over the item in the magazine's "Periscope" section, saying it was based on a confidential source -- a "senior U.S. government official" -- who now says he is not sure whether the story is true.

The report, in the issue dated May 9, said U.S. military investigators had found that American interrogators at the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, had flushed a copy of the Koran, the sacred Muslim text, down a toilet. A week later, when newspapers in Afghanistan and Pakistan picked up the item, it sparked anti-American demonstrations in the Afghan city of Jalalabad in which four protesters were killed and more than 60 injured. About a dozen more protesters were killed in the following days when the demonstrations spread across Afghanistan and to Pakistan and other countries.

AFAIK, that story was never true. The author has admitted that his single source doesn't know one way or the other. At any rate, it was the cause of deaths, and I think that is the real point here.

The NY Post is a blatently biased rag. No point in buying it for anything other than maybe sports coverage.

No one said that the Post couldn't print that. Just that it was stupid and in bad taste. Freedom of the press doesn't mean free from criticism. Morons love to cite rights in this country without any idea what they even mean...

Ya kind of what I said, the source retracted his story and then Newsweek retracted theirs. You said "Newsweek, the publication that made up a story about flushing the Koran down a toilet ", they made up nothing. And I was too strong above when I said "It ended up being true", that's not correct. Allegations resurfaced (in law suits) after the retraction. All news agencies get things wrong in their attempt to be the first to a story, I don't really consider anything Murdoch owns as a new agency though.

It's interesting to know that News Corp welcomes powdery substances in the mail and actually finds them funny.

Especially after several mailpersons were killed by Anthrax in the mail. Such a jolly good fun for News Corp and Fox.
