OSLO, Norway, Dec. 12 ? Keiko, the killer whale made famous by the ''Free Willy'' movies, has died in Norwegian coastal waters where he remained after millions of dollars and a decade of work failed to coax him back to the open sea, his caretakers said early Saturday.

So, were the animal rights nuts right in the end? Sounds like they kept Willy from what he wanted most: human compasion.

What they learned can be used in other situations. Its not like it was a total waste of time and money.

Anyone see how much money was spent on that whale? $20 Million up front, and $500,000 a month there after. Good GAWD what a waste of money.

Who financed it?

Well, if the whale was troubled as purported and in suffering, then I am happy to see it go. The last time I heard about the whale was its return to humans (in some European country, I forget), in spite of its freedom. It seemed if the theory was true, then the whale's return signaled its loss of hope and its belief in captivity.

I am happy to see the whale go. :D It's finally relieved of any human politics or intervention. Long live whales!

Keikouse this

When he was in the Aquarium at Newport Or.

Its a tough call, to spend a long life living in a box or having the opportunity to explore the open ocean. It is certainly true that he enjoyed human company, we will never know if he was happier locked up with humans or free to swim but with more limited human contact.

I believe that the cost of supporting him was through donations so while yes it cost a small fortune to attempt to set him free, I cannot help but believe that the experiment added alot to our general knowledge of Orcas in general.

What do they do with the body after it died? I mean, it's so big, what can they possibly do with it? :(

There's got to be a cannery that could handle it. Have a contest to determine how the label would look. They could recoup some of the costs that the animal has run up over the years. I bet they'd make a fortune, one can at a time.

Lead me from tortured dreams
Childhood themes of nights alone.
Wipe away endless years,
childhood tears as dry as stone.

From seeds of confusion,
illusions dark blossoms have grown.
Even now in furrows of sorrow
the dance still is sung.

My life's course is guided
decided by limits drawn
on charts of my past ways
and pathways since I was born.

I carry the dust of a journey
that cannot be shaken away
It lives deep within me
for I breathed it every day

You and I are yesterday's answers
the earth of the past come to flesh
Eroded by time's rivers
to the shapes we now possess

Come share of my breath and my substance
and mingle our streams and our times
In bright infinite moments
our reasons are lost in our eyes

Come forth, from love's spire
Born in life's fire.
Come forth, from love's spire
In the burning, all are [of our] yearning,
for life to be.
And in pain there will [must] be gain,
New Life!

Stirring in, salty streams
And dark hidden seams
Where the fossil sun gleams.

They were, sent from [to] the gates
Ride the tides of fate.
They were, sent from [to] the gates,
In the burning all are [of our] yearning,
For life to be.

There's no end to my life,
No beginning to my death:
Death is life.
