Keeping the Macbook on w/ Lid closed?

Is it safe to keep the macbook on when the lid is closed. I found a program called InsominaX that would allow it, but I don't want to hurt my macbook. I guess I can just leave the lid open, but since the macbook spends a lot of time on the coffee table it'd be nice to close the lid but stay on Adium.

The MacBook is certainly happy running with the lid closed when there is a keyboard and mouse connected:

So I wouldn't expect there to be a problem using InsomniaX without a keyboard and mouse attached.

I keep mine close and running all the time, and haven't had any problems with it. If worst comes to worst, i just assume the CPU will just step down if it gets too hot.

Aye, I've used InsomniaX to keep it on before. Works great...

Don't know why it wouldnt be as easy as, say, going in to the power properties and telling OS X not to put the notebook in sleep mode if the lid closes... Kind of like... Windows...

Sadly, the trick in the article only works on OSX, not Windows. I haven't yet figured out a way to have my 30" monitor running in full 2560x1600 with the lid closed under XP.

Control Panel -> Power Options

Somewhere in one of those tabs will be an option to tell the computer what to do when the lid closes. Simply select 'Do Nothing'

are you using Boot Camp or Parallels? I use parallels and the lid to my Macbook Pro is always closed. I haven't run book camp though.

In my case, in Parallels if I have OSX running on the external monitor with the laptop closed, the Parallels XP VM will not start, complaining that it wasn't able to allocate memory. Weird.

Don't know what to tell you...it works fine for me. Parallels works fine with the lid open I take it? Maybe allocate more virtual RAM towards it. Also, Macbook or Macbook Pro (seems like a pro with that high resolution output)?

Correct, a 17" pro with hi res screen. It doesn't matter how much or little memory I allocate, I get the error no matter what. Disconnect the external monitor and open the laptop, and it starts working.
