Hello --

I have an AMD Athlon XP 1900+ with a Soyo Dragon Plus mobo. I'm having a major problems keeping it cool. The Cha temperature is usually at 42 C and the CPU is usually at 60 C. My computer is having a major stability problems, and I think that the high CPU temperature could be a factor. I'm using the retail heatsink + fan. What can I do to get my CPU down to a decent level?

Should I buy a new CPU fan?
Should I buy some case fans?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm really struggling here guys, and I'm new to the whole cooling thing. Thanks.

a 42 C Chassis temperature? Holy Crap!!! That is unfathomably high. You had better go and buy some case fans to stick into that case. I have never seen a case with mobo/chassi temps that high. Ordinarily I would ask if you're sure that the temp is really the chassi temp and not the CPU temp, but since the other temp is 60 C I dont think theres any chance.

I concur with SWScorch. Your HSF can only cool to surrounding air temp and that temp seem awefully high to me. Unless it's 100ºF in your room, you might seriously consider some case fans.

those fans will definitely help. if you want to know the specs on the fans, they can be found here. a nicely ventilated system should have a case temp ~2-5 degrees above the room temp.

Definetely some case fans, and get a better HS/F unit. here is the one i have..this
It seems to work well, and also DON'T forget some Arctic Silver thermal compound!! My CPU temps r 45 to 52 C.

What kind of case do you have?

An 18'C difference between chassis and CPU seems a bit high

If you can remove the sides of the case, try to put a regular 9" household fan on the side and see if reducing the temp improves stability.

It looks to me like you made the same mistake I did in using an old heavy weight Slot-1 MIDI case with the CPU under the powersupply and no exhaust fan!..

Time to grab an Aluminium Lian-Li or Chieftek case I think!.. or at least something which allows for air circulation...

at 20 degrees room-temp I get 23deg case temp, 39 degrees CPU temp idle - and that`s with a Globalwin FOP38 with a slower fan on it (rather crap) and the 1800+ is now @1900+ .. I`ve ordered a Thermalright AX7 - I`m expecting Celeron sort of temps from that :)

Maybe this reflect my setup. My power supply is very warm and sit above my cpu. eventhough use i 8045 on my cpu... the temp still 48C normal use (browse internet etc...).

Like I said, I ordered those two case fans so perhaps that should work.

My case is the CG ATX 6039L Mid Tower Case w/AMD & P4 300W PS USB

Alright, now I really have a problem. I don't think my case came with a case fan holder, which will make it hard to run 2 fans. I've looked everywhere, and I have no idea where I can buy just a holder itself...

Any ideas?

wow yea a case temp of 42 is nuts. now hot is it in your room???? my case tempo never gets above 30. usally low 20s i would suggest a good exaust fan panflo or a papst. biggest that will fit. and a good intake fan same brands also good size. make sure the intake is in the front bottom and teh exaust is in teh top back. that should greatly reduce you temp.and is that dosent solve the problim consider a New heatsink and fan for the CPU. a Sk-6 or AX-7 will do the job

get the chieftech case with 2 fans at $49

add the other 2 fans you just bought, and swap powersupplies, you may see a major improvement =0 (after getting a new hsf too)

Athlons can operate up to 70, but thats very hot! 50 is enough to burn your hand, 35 will seem warm...your case is way too hot
