Keeping a network adapter on while in standby

I'm wondering if I can keep a network adapter functional when my laptop is on standby so that IM and email clients can remain functional.
 
If it is a laptop be aware that Laptop Standby can be tricky at times since there is a lot of None standard ?Play?.

There are usually two locations that can set to send the NIC to ?Sleep?.

1. A setting in the NIC Drivers.

2. Hardware Standby setting in the computer's BIOS.

Make sure that both settings are Off and it probably would work.
