ALBURGH, Vt. -- A brawl broke out among spectators at a middle school basketball game in northern Vermont, and a 60-year-old man who participated in the fight died, police said.

State troopers were called to the Alburgh Community Education Center just before 7 p.m. Tuesday after a report of a large fight involving spectators during a seventh- and eighth-grade boys basketball game between Alburgh and St. Albans.

The fight ended before troopers arrived, and many of the participants had left. Russell Giroux, of Alburgh, sought medical attention, police said. He was taken by ambulance to the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans, where he was pronounced dead.

The town is literally on the Canadian border, about 50 miles south of Montreal.

Fights at school sporting events are not exactly "big news" and for all we know from that "news report" (lol) the guy who died started it & deserved what he got. (to be fair death IS a bit harsh!)

I'm pretty sure the reason for the incident is common knowledge among folks who were actually at the game and the potentially ugly truth of "why" is being swept under the rug by the local "powers that be".

This is so fucking stupid. Do these people show up drunk, or are they just really this contentious over shit sober?

Anyone care to make a wager on racist comments having lit the fuse?

Vermont is known nationally as a "liberal" state BUT it's also hard-core New England and much of the rural/mountainous part of the northern state is lily-white "redneck" conservative to the core similar to New Hampshire.
