Oh man, I've been so fortunate these last few months. New job I applied for, it demands all sorts of crap (past awards, 2 most recent job appraisal reviews, certified student transcripts...etc.)

Wife always calls me a packrat, but now I have justification >:)

My recent cleaning-house and re-organization of my stuff has paid off, as I only have a few days to get this damn resume out the door

Anyway, cool story? Keep your records ATOT!

Duh.
I get pissed when people feel the urge to throw things out immediately or toss whole filing cabinets full of stuff.
Purging once a year is fine, if you are careful.

That is not a resume. That is an invasion of privacy ... it better be a damn good job because the management is excessively anal.

If they want college transcripts they can ask the college. I don't have them and never did.

Unofficial usually does it, but I have had a few demand original certified. My B.A. makes me pay $2.50 a copy and my Masters school gives me up to 15 for free, go figure!

LOL @ Brain Injury

Showing the diploma is adequate. I was never asked for any of mine, never a transcript.

The companies I have talked to have had a company that does "background checks". Basically they look for any evidence that your job history matches what is in the application.

Then there are the companies that forgo the application & just use the resume. That has always made the most sense to me.

Obviously, you want to keep a copy of some records forever.

Are you saying that you need to keep the actual paper version, or is scanning and then shredding OK?

very few things you should have to keep orig signed copies, If I had a scanner I would scan and shred, and then store on an encrypted disc.

Just saying in general to keep track of your crap, I know so many people who just throw stuff like awards/job appraisals away w/out thinking about it

But there are some.....deed to house, DD214 (discharge form) from military, marriage license, among others. Most stuff, though, doesn't matter, as you said.

If some company wanted to see annual reviews from prior jobs, I'd tell them to eat a dick.

I do save most everything - but half the battle is being able to find it.. lol.

We bought a filing cabinet several months ago, which has gone a long way towards organizing our paperwork. It's amazing how much time it takes to file your papers though, and it's easy to get behind.

Yeah, that's a bit ridiculous. Also, copy of awards? I've gotten two big awards from my current job but I think I only got a paper with one of them. The other one I just got this big huge trophy sort of thing.

Best solution I've found is a scanner and Evernote. Evernote lets you search files and you can scan to OCR and tag the files if you want to, to make them easier to search. Evernote syncs a copy of your notes online, so even if your computer blows up, you still have access to them.

About the only thing I keep in paper format these days is stuff like my Social Security card, birth certificate, etc. - everything else gets digitized & forgotten about, until I need it and then I can search for it and find it instantly

I have an original LES (Leave & Earnings Statement) from 1990 that shows I was in Panama during Operation Just Cause. It doesn't entitle me to crap but it's nice to have a reference in the event that it did.

Meh, that stuff is easy to get from asking old employers or schools, the really important stuff I have scanned and saved as attachments or on other media.

Never needed copies of any of that stuff anyway. I hate having tonnes of crap and papers laying around my place.
