I was watching cbs news tonight and they say the leader of Afghanistan is making statements like "we might join the Taliban if this continues", the White House response, they are troubled by his remarks and may consider canceling his visit to the White House in the future.

Can we get anymore weak in our responses to other countries ? I guess next time Iran acts up not only will we send them a letter, we might not send their president a birthday card either !

It was the President of Afghanistan, not Pakistan. (My general assumption is it was simply a remark made for effect, although clearly over the top.)

First of all, how do you know that this publically made comment is the WH's only response?

Second, do you know whether the leader of Pakistan is making anti-US comments to appease the rather large anti-US bloc in his country, and whether or not he has done so with U.S. approval? I would posit that the Pakistani government has to have some legitimacy with the populace there, and if we want them to assist us, then we have a vested interest in the legitimacy of that regime. Accordingly, we might do something like, oh say, pre-agree with the Pakistani head of state that if he wants to bash us pubically to gain legitimacy, it's OK, and that we will, of course, respond with a public slap on the wrist but nothing more.

There has been much, much more of a reaction to Karzai's comments than this one statement. There was been a lot going on behind the scenes, such as HRC talking to Karzai for over a half hour on the phone about this.

BTW, there is speculation popping up today in the news that Karzai may have a drug problem.

Well, we could always kill him. But he's doing it for domestic politics, Afghan style. However, he forgets his country is crawling with foreigners with heavy weapons. I can definitely see one of his men killing him for a hit of heroin or $100. He forgets he's a puppet.

How about the president doing something like making a public comment addressing the statements made by someone he just talked with not long ago that supposedly is an ally instead of sending out his flunky .

In terms of US options regarding a rather flaky Karzai, they are few and far between.

GWB simply picked the wrong man to back in Afghanistan and once elected, Karzai is hard to get rid off.

But now Nato is between a rock and a hard place, Afghan government corruption is almost total and is the best asset the Taliban has, we keep asking Karzai to crack down on corruption, and its quite clear Karzai intends to do no such thing. Its not totally clear how corrupt Hamid Karzai is personally, but his brother is totally corrupt. But what is clear is that no one is doing a damn thing to clean up Afghan government corruption.

Meaning Nato can't sell its turd of corrupt governance to the Afghan people, and unless Nato cracks down, no one will. But Nato does not have the authority to crack down, they turned that responsibility over to Karzai, and we have a catch 22 lose lose situation.

How wonderful, my tax dollars going to support a entire State dedicated to drug cultivation, and we call it democracy in action.

This is Afghanistan. They're all murderers and crooks, it's just a case of backing the one who is nominally OUR murderer and crook - without forgetting what he is.
