Keep T2i kit or 30D with 50mm?

I was able to get on the Amazon deal around Christmas for a T2i 18-55mm kit for $560 after returning the 50-250mm lens.

Worthwhile to sell the 30D + carrying case + Sandisk 2GB Extreme CF card? If I do, I'm on the fence if I should sell the 18-55mm kit as well. I think the prices are very low, and I'm quite surprised by the performance of the lens (not as fast as my 50mm 1.8/f but I'll take it).

But wait! I'm already so late into the buying a T2i, should I just return it and wait for the t3i? Perhaps by that time, I'll have more money for a nice lens and Rodeo mic (I don't even have a desktop rig).

What do you guys think?

T2i is a lot better than the 30D except in build quality. Image quality is definitely superior.

Should I keep the kit lens though?

edit: Compared to the 30D and my buddy's 1ds Mark III, the T2i and the plastic nifty fifty felt like a feather.

If the 50mm is the only lens you have...I would keep the kit lens at least until I got a replacement. 50mm as your only lens is kinda long on a crop sensor.

yeah. besides, kit lens are cheap. if you wanted to sell it, you could probably re-buy it around the same price. they're going for around ~90-110 on my CL

Yeah of course.

I had a Tamron 17-50mm F/2.8

Great "everyday" lens when I had it.

I've been eyeing that for a while (and was eyeing it earlier this morning). Pics look superb for $350~ used. You think I can do without the VC model for video?

What about wider stuff?

Worth it over VC?

The 17-50 VC is like $450-500, vs $300-375 for the Non-VC (Used prices). And stabilization at these focal lengths, isn't completely necessary. But for video, I'm sure it'll help quite a bit.

Interesting. Anywhere, where I can read up on how image stabilization works?

If I were to get lens that cover 50mm range for the nifty fifty, should I still keep it?

edit: AkumaX, I was selling a 430ex ii for a friend a while back, ha

T3i is coming out soon. Feb is when the new Rebels typically come out right? I would hang on just a bit longer, though speculation points at the same 18MP sensor being used.

hmm.. at 50mm, f/1.8 vs f/2.8 could make a difference depending on the situation..

p.s. find another 430ex ii to sell me :p

I used to own both the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 non-VC and the Canon 50 f/1.8.

I say that it is good to own both, using the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 as your everyday walk around lens, and taking out the 50 1.8 when needed for low light photography or when you want shallow depth of field.

It also depends on what you do, because a 50 1.8 is long for most people. In which case, the Canon 28 1.8 (at triple the price) or the Sigma 30 1.4 is usually a more useful prime lens for 1.6X crop cameras.

DLeRium: Yeah, according to the previous T2i, T1i, XSi releases. I wonder how long will it take for it to reach hot deal status? Perhaps the market is flooded with T2i that the T3i won't be in as much demand?

T3i/600D

18mp sensor
3.7fps
Vari-Angle 3″ LCD
DiGiC IV.
Redesign of the model nameplate as well.

Minor bumps. The articulating screen is not bad.

AkumaX: I'll probably keep the 50mm for easy on the go shooting, or if I don't want to carry a lot of bulk. T2i + 50mm is light as a feather.

CPForYou: How heavy was your Tamron? I was eye-ing the Sigma 30mm 1.4 when Amazon had their sale. I'll probably swap the 50mm to a 1.4 down the road.

30D + 18-55mm would allow me to purchase the Tamron 17-50 or should I return the T2i and wait until the T3i release. Ah.

I tried the Canon 50mm f/1.4 from a friend. It wasn't bad. But you have to think about crop factor on these bodies... So I picked up the Sigma 30mm. If you like the 'extra' reach in the 50mm, you could consider a Sigma 50mm f/1.4 instead?

P.S. What would the T3i have besides the angled screen? I mean, I don't see why a person wouldn't get the 60D instead (street value on these aren't nowhere near the $1199 MSRP...)

You have a point. I feel 50mm has too much reach, which is why I want wider lens and returned the 55-250mm lens.

I'm thinking this setup instead. It's a light setup (I'm hoping for the wider stuff). I tried my friend's 24-70mm f/2.8L on the 30D and it was too bulky to be fun. Perhaps it was because I weren't using it with his full-frame.

Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 or Canon 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5
Sigma 30mm f/1.4
Canon 50mm f/1.8

I should have kept the 55-250mm zoom.

By the way, I already invested in a battery grip and batteries for it, as well as a 16GB SDHC.

I ended up re-getting the 55-250mm (got it initially several months ago, but got it again cuz someone "new" came into the Canon family :p). It's quite a fun lens, for what it's worth...
