Hey all,
I've gone thru the last few months saving my pennies and when I get home there should be a GTX 470 waiting for me. To that end, I've been wondering what to do with my 2 EVGA 8800GTX's I'm gonna be replacing.

Should I:
-Just remove one and use the other for Physx (or however you spell it)
-Take them both out and sell 'em (any speculation on what they may fetch?)

Thanks for your advice as always AT........

I'd sell 'em. You can still get anywhere from $75-100 for one in good condition on eBay. Should help recoup the cost of the new card a good bit.

Even if I replace my (which I will this year) I'll keep it for a spare. 3 1/2 of gaming is too much time invested to get rid of her!

You dont need to keep it for phsyx if you have a powerful enough CPU. THere is option in nvpanel to choose GPU or CPU, Todays games average 60 percent CPU usage,,, soo there 40 percent there for phsyx it still wont go to 100 percent usage. This is on a nominal CPU. If you have a dual core or old Athlon 64 or PentiumD then keep the graphics card, if your CPU is greater then above listed, just sell the card and use CPU as phsyx. Thank you and GB

Thank you for your replies. I think selling them both would be best for me. I spose if I really wanted/needed, I got a 8800(GTS? - I dunno, the 640M one) sitting around doing nothing.
I'll go ahead and post 'em here in the FS/FT section as I've never done Ebay.

Edit: and of course I toss in the 470, start up STALKER, crank up the settings and watch the GPU temp climb all the way to 97C after 15 mins...lmao. That TIM got changed out REAL quick!

I hear Arctic Cooling has a new Accelero Xtreme model that's compatible with the GTX 465/470/480 models. Might be something to buy down the line. ;)

Sell both of them. Keeping them means in 95% of games, they will just be sitting sitting there in idle doing nothing. Unless you care for Mafia II at maximum physx settings, you can probably sell each for $70 x 2.

Yup that's exactly what's going to happen because almost every 470 made uses a stock fan profile courtesy of Nvidia. Your fan speed was likely below 55 percent fan speed at maximum load. Set a manual fan profile. I have mine set to 32 percent fan speed up to 50*C, then from 50-60*C fan speed rises to 50 percent, then from 60-70*C fan speed fan rises to 60 percent, from 70-80*C fan rises to 70 percent, from 80-100*C fan rises to 100 percent. In my case the fan speed never exceeds 66-67 percent.

How much did changing the TIM drop your temps?

After I changed out the TIM, the max temps went from 97C down to 91 - not much, but hey I'll take it!

Now I've got this random 'rebooting' problem to deal with. I tell ya, if it's not one thing it's another. Before I put in the new card the 'puter had been running flawlessly for over a year. Go figure. I just now changed the RAM from 1T to 2T.....meh, maybe something will change....maybe not lol.

Oh, and I think this will be available in a few weeks. I'm likin it - it's even the same color as my case....lol!

Edit: Just saw this one too........price is not bad either (approx $60 USD). Although I am a little suspicious of the temps...........74C max running furmark?

Just because I remembered this....lol

I ended up selling both of the GTX's for $150 to a friend of mine who is building a new computer.

smart move. if you end up really really wanting a 2nd card for physx a gt 240 is just fine and it's a lot less than $75.
