Keep getting "u r out of diskspace" message even tho my HDD has 5 gigs left!

It all started with me trying to install Medival: Total War. I kept getting this error (error 106 or something). And it was accompanied by "run out of disk space" message (as activision's faq says that it does sometimes). I was eventually able to work around the error by putting disc two (the one giving the error) in my secondary drive (the DVD ROM).

But now i am getting this "out of diskspace" error and the diskclean up window keeps poping up whenever i try to download something. And it also causes my download to fail. And other mind boggling thing is that i doest happen every time. If i have 10 simultaneous downloads going ranging in size from 100kb to 50MB it will fail 5 of them and not necessary the larger ones 🙁

ANyone got any ideas? I have switched Virtual Memory to manual but it still doesnt help 🙁

Thanx for any help in advance!

Your link doesn't work. Take out an http://. I would have suggested virtual memory, but you already tried that. My prognosis: Your computer doesn't like you.

Do you have a ton of really small files on your hard drive? I had this problem once and it turned out that I was out of allocation units even though I had plenty of space to spare. Apparently some program created thousands and thousands of 0-length temp files in the Local Settings\Temp folder under my profile. Type in chkdsk at a command prompt and take a look at the number available allocation units it shows.

Run scandisk. One time my harddrive reported 600 megs free on one drive but it turned out to be 50. Scandisk all drives using "Standard" instead of "Thorough" and see how much space is left.

Well ran the Scandisk overnight and now my comp says the i have just 1 meg left!!

I am beginning to lean towards Deeko's prognosis as the being the real problem.

I had to come to work so didnt really have time to see where is all the space being used up but i left defrag running this morning and if i am truely out of space then it looks like i am in the market of another HDD.

Anyone know good deals for HDD? looking for a high performance IDE one

Thanx all 🙂

I was gonna post pretty much exactly what FishtankX said.
My psychic powers tell me you're running FAT/FAT32. It's very susceptible to corruption. I've seen a number of cases where the FAT gets corrupted and misreports the amount of free space. Running scandisk almost always fixes it.

Yeah, that's what happned. As woodchuck said, Fat32 has problems with misreporting how much free space you have. Defragmenting will have no effect on your free space. I have a piece of advice though.

Search for a folder named temp, dump out everything inside. On my system, that cleared up 2 gigs. Then, clear out all your temporary internet files. This should free up quite a bit.

If you should really need a new harddrive, Iwould reccomend the Baracuda ATAIV 80 gig variant, sells for a little over 100USD. (US dollars)

As per the link (it's broken BTW) you provided did you "Take the following steps prior to installing the software to your computer:" ?

Not the first time since i installed the way i would install any game. But second time i did. But i think once i get home i will have a ton of cleaning to do. But none the less i think i will get a new HDD as well since i have been forced to do these 'clean ups' all to often and at 'only' 30 gig my HDD is getting cramped.

Any 80 gig drive would fit in nicely 🙂 my only dread is having to reinstall the OS on the new drive (since i expect the new drive to be better performance i would prolly switch to it as my main)

PS. If i do install the OS again would anyone recommend XP on a gaming machine?

if you are using norton utilities and have norton protect recycled bin.... you will have to reduce the size of the "maximum size of recycled bin" or disable and deleted the recycled folder

By default it will be 10% of your drive size

If you are running XP, and NTFS, it needs to "reserve" a lot of space for the MSFT. Also, System Restore needs space.

Hard drives are too cheap to put up with space. Also, for normal file management and defragging, the good rule of thumb is always have at least 10% of your HDD space free.

Hmm, who said anything about installing a new OS? Just pop it in there, jumper it for slave (As inslave to the new drive) and format a 30 gig partition, a 30 gig partition, and a 20 gig partition. Ready to go!
