keep getting disconnected

a friend of mine is on aol.i put together an old p233 for him.the problem is he gets kicked off every 4 or 5 min.hook up his old 386
and connection works fine.any ideas.thanks

In both systems, are all of the components the same (aside from the CPU and motherboard, obviously)? If not, there is probably something that is faulty or not configured properly in the P233 setup. If possible, please post the system configurations so that we might be able to help you further.
 
Try lowering the modem speed. Most modems will set the speed up to 115,200 when it really should be set to 57600 or lower even. No analog modem in the world will connect at 115,200. At that setting the software tries to compress differently than at 57,600. Also, try fiddling with the eror control settings and the FIFO settings.
