I am trying to install a legal never before installed copy of XP Pro onto my soon to become file serv computer.

OK so... I delete the parition, create a new one and do a NTFS format.

Setup loads all fine and begins installation then less then a few minutes into the install it stops and gives me this error message...

Installation Failed: D:\I386\ASMS Error Msg! Incorrect Function

Anyways know what's going on and can offer a possible solution?

can you take a stick or two of RAM out? in setup errors, in my experience it is either bad media or bad RAM most of the time. also maybe try a diff optical drive. srry for not being too specific.

Have to agree with checking the cdrom drive... but a defaulting of the BIOS could also help. Also, if XP has never been on this machine, an upgrade (flash) of the bios could be in order too.

Is it always the exact same error message or does it vary? If it varies, you may want to try a different CD-ROM drive.
