I posted there first.

Basically I'm looking for basic cheap transportation to put around town on. This guy has a Honda Interceptor 500 for sale. It has 50K miles on it. It starts nice and seems fine. He has replaced the carb, put a new battery, and a brand new set of tires on it.

He is asking 1200. I know that is chump change to you guys, but currently is alot for me. Basically, I'm looking at something for a 10 mile or so round trip a day and maybe the occasional 30 mile jaunt.

There was some concern about parts being it is so old. Basically I'm looking for any advice one might give. One thing is certain, he won't go down on the price.

Thanks for your thoughts.

If it's in good shape and runs well $1000 is fair for any decent running motorcycle. Mileage is high but if well maintained there is no reason to expect that it won't continue to run well for a long time to come.

Does it leak any fluids? Check around the cylinder heads for weeping and look for oil leaks under the engine. Also, check all the lights and inspect the shifter to make sure it is tight and not stripped. How is the chain? Is the bike at the limits for the chain adjustments or is there plenty of adjustment left in it?

With 50k on the clock, I would bet it needs a timing chain, not to mention I don't know that motor specifically, but it would also need the valvetrain adjusted if it is solid. It may also need guides or seals. I would take it for a ride and check the plugs, see what it is running like.

You should ask your question here....

My memory is rusty, but I think the VFR 500s had a problem with the crankshafts failing back in the day. If buying this one is a stretch for you financially, do all the research you can on known issues before committing.

You will have a hard time finding a good bike for $1200 or less and I have always liked Interceptors but 50k miles seems high, I guess it all depends on how it has been maintained.
