My fiancee and I are looking to maybe do a road trip down to Austin from Dallas for the fourth of July weekend (if I can get a rental car without a CC that is). If we do make it down to Austin where should we stay and what should we do to get a feel for what Austin is about. Are there any good reasonably walkable neighborhoods worth staying at? Sights we should see, restaurants or shops we should go to that are uniquely Austin?

We moved to Dallas from Seattle a couple years ago and while Seattle had a few touristy things to do there were a lot of hidden gem types of things to do. We're kind of hoping for those kind of hidden gem things.

Thanks!

no, you just need to stop posting

there is no such thing as 'reasonably walkable' anywhere in texas in the month of july. living in dallas, you should know that already.

things to do:
eat/drink on 6th street
kayak on town lake (which is a river)
jog around town lake
eat at the hula hut
rent jet skis on lake travis
salt lick, bring your own shiner

4th, 5th, and 6th street at night. burgers at casino el camino (goth bar) on 6th. dizzy rooster is the bar Real World Austin went to. library/aquarium is a lot more fun. go to broken spoke beloved patriot tonk - i think they have mech bull there. whole foods flagship store is in the city and it BLOWS away the one on 9th. best sushi is either uchi or musashino. eat at rudys bbq in town for extra moist brisket and creamed corn, salt lick (30 minutes out), county line on 2222 for the view (you want to drive on 2222 towards travis lake to hang out anyway). and then take a day trip out to luling (45 min drive?) for the absolute best barbecue in the country. watch the bats on congress bridge come out at sundown. on thursday walk up and down south congress drive where locals come out to eat, shop, etc. its called first thursdays. barton springs road next to the river (sourced from colorado river) is extremely local and awesome place to hang out and eat in restaurants patios/outdoor in spring afternoons. drink margaritas at any of the tex mex place... notably gueros, el arroyo, or trudys. the only proper breakfast food are breakfast tacos from juan in a million. coffee joint called mozarts and neighboring tex mex placed called hula hut are absolutely packed at night cuz its set on town lake and has the best view. the coffee is probably the best ive ever tasted too
