Keep an x800 Pro or a 6800GT?

I bought an eVGA 6800 GT last week and now I have an BBA x800 Pro that will be delivered on August 3rd. After Seeing the Doom 3 benchmarks yesterday I don't see much of a difference between the 2 cards...in Doom 3 at least. Are the 12 pipelines of the x800 Pro going to hamper me in the long run? I am actually starting to feel like the x800 Pro will win the HL2 benchmarks. And Even though Doom 3 is going to be awesome, Half Life 2+mods will be the game I spend a majority of the time playing until the next Unreal engine arrives in a couple of years. I know we need a website to run some HL2 benches like HardOCP to give us some real numbers but I was curious to see other's opinions now that we know how Doom 3 will perform.

use your 6800GT to play doom 3, and use X800 pro to play half-life 2 :p

You didn't see the difference in benchmarks in Doom3 between the two cards?

Average frames per second are what I am looking at the most since the minimum fps was effected by 2 cutscenes and the maximum fps was limited by it being capped at 60fps.

I will most like be playing at 1280x1024 and the x800 Pro can hold a 51+fps average while the 6800 GT can probably do that but probably 60fps average. So, no difference that would effect the game.

if all you need is 1280x1024 then the pro if fine. However, with the GT you can probably enable some AA at 1280x1024.

Both cards are phenomenal pieces of archetecture. From the majority of benchmarks, ive seen the GT win over the x800pro. As far as HL2 goes, NOBODY has benches of these two cards competing. I personally would keep the GT due to the evidence that we do have (all past games + Doom 3 benchmarks). Based on this, i could see the x800pro winning in HL2, but not by a lot due to the history of the GT's power. If you paid a similar price for them, id return/cancel my order on the x800pro.

Sidenote: If i were you, i wouldnt buy for games that have been dealyed for 2 yrs. I also wouldnt predict on these games either. I mean a 9600xt was a reccomended card for HL2. (it was bundled with it, right?)

Well, the x800 Pro is going to be a present for a family member but they may not want it afterall.

I will probably bench them both on Doom 3 and see how it goes.

i'd lean towards the GT, but frankly i'd keep whichever i got the best deal on, or whichever has the drivers or features most important to you.

while i do think we'll see a bit better performance from the PRO in upcoming driver revisions, frankly there's not a game coming out that won't play well on either card - including HL2 on the GT... and the GT, while somewhat faster (with current driver revisions) in some games, is not so much faster it will enjoy any more longevity than the PRO - tho doom3 games should see more of a substantial performance benefit from nv's ultrashadow 'feature'.

while sm3 is certainly worth considering, frankly there will be much faster cards out from both NV & ATI by the time it's really relevant (ie the next unreal engine games), and we'll probably be worrying about directx"next"...

either card you keep should function very well until your next purchase.

If you are going to play open GL games mostly you should keep the GT otherwise keep the Pro. I am more into direct x games (hopefully HL2 comes soon, far cry, etc..) than open GL (although I will play doom 3) so I was hoping to buy a Powercolor X800 XT.... but my old system broke before I could buy one (had to build early).

I bought an EVGA GT because they were available and I could step up to the Ultra.

If your family member doesn't want the X800pro, adopt me and I will gladly accept it as a present. ;)

Keep in mind that the latest Doom 3 benches at HOCP were capped at 60fps. The first set of benches, released a week or so ago, showed how much faster than the X800P the GT really is (read: a lot).

But if HL2 is your goal, you may want to keep the X800P. If you can play with both of them, see if you prefer the Pro's AA or the GT's smoother texture filtering (supposedly less texture shimmer). Otherwise, I think the GT has the slight edge over the Pro overall, though the Pro comes out on top slightly in Far Cry with AA+AF with the latest SM2.b path in the v1.2 patch (so it may be slightly faster in HL2 with AA+AF).

Depends on how much you can sell each card for. You might be able to sell the GT for a lot more than the Pro because it is in high demand.

Maybe for someone but not I...I am a patient guy and can wait for another deal on the GT to surface...legitimate deal that is...

You're a nice guy Lonyo. ;)

Supposedly Buyxtremegear is shipping the XFX GT Monday, because they "just came in at 5:10 Friday".

Word to the wise:
Buyxtremegear is no newegg. Charging me $4.00 for same day processing and $29 for overnight shipping is somewhat pointless if you don't have the stock?
They have no phone service for orders, their webtracking of orders is only updated once a day, and apparently they don't have any problem with charging you for merchandise they don't even possess.

They have a 7.7x rating on reseller that I'm going to go about bringing down at the conclusion of this little adventure with them, and I'm going to be sure to cost them some sales by posting about them in the forums as well if I don't have a GT in my hands Tuesday.

Total BS.

Ouch, thank you for the info. I will avoid them.

BTW- the GT is the obvious choice here. I don't think there are any relevant differences at this point to outweigh it's Doom3/SM3 advantage. I've heard some people already have the Painkiller SM3 patch, there is the Far Cry SM3 patch, and other SM3 games coming out this year to consider. Those companies may not be as generous as CryTek and spend their time and money coding around the X800s hardware limitations?
