From www.imdb.com:

In what today's (Friday) Wall Street Journal described as "really weird, by Hollywood standards," Keanu Reeves has sometimes handed over part of his salary to other actors or crew. According to the newspaper, he twice agreed to cut his fee by $2 million -- when producers had difficulty making salary deals with Al Pacino for The Devil's Advocate and with Gene Hackman for The Replacements -- and asked that they be given the money instead. More recently, the WSJ said, Reeves gave up part of his back-end deal for the sequels to The Matrix and told the studio to divide it among the special-effects and costume-design workers. "He felt that they were the ones who made the movie and that they should participate," one executive familiar with the situation told the Journal.

My opinion? [keanu]Whoa...! [/keanu]

keanu has always been just a bit different from other actors, another case in point, he turned down the lead in Speed 2 so that he could tour w/ his band dogstar.

how many actors woulda done that? speed2 coulda been huge w/ him in it.

I still think he's stupid... but at least he's nice and stupid - unlike Tom Cruise who is just stupid.

Sorry, but a class act would be giving the $2 mil to a charity.

They'd put it to much better use.

Good afternoon,
Giving away the money to his coworkers on Matrix is most certainly a class act, charity and teamwork come in many forms; do not belittle generosity and kindness. You hear about professional athletes taking pay cuts for the team, but rarely anyone else.

In this age of actors making $20 million or more per picture, top actresses making $15 million or more, how often does anyone hear of folks like Jim Carrey or Julia Roberts giving away $2 million dollars to be shared with their coworkers? While most top actors have more money than it would take to make 10 American families financial secure, Keanu's giving of $2 million dollars to his coworkers means a BIG boost to their lives... things like being able to afford a home, pay medical bills, education for their children, extra money available to be put in an IRA, etc.

Last person I heard of doing anything like this was Drew Carey. Took his entire TV crew and their families on a surprise cruise vacation. Now there's a man who knows how to party.

We're all in this together. All for one, one for all.

Yeah right... and i wonder what's your yearly charity contribution. Or hell, i wonder if you've ever taken a pay cut so others less fortunate can benefit.

how do you know that he doesn't give to charity? For all we know, this is just one of the good things he does with his money. At least he's not like the other 95% of Hollywood or professional athletes that "need" $20 mil to live.

I'm not saying that it's not generous of him, but consider the following:

- The people that the money is going to probably already make very good money.
- They will be taxed heavily on the pay increase.
- What will they spend the money on?

VS. Charitable donation:

- Charities can use all the money they can get
- Tax free if he told his employer to donate the money directly to the charity.
- Money will be spent much better.

Generous? Yes. The best possible solution?

No.

I will admit that I don't think he has any acting ability, but giving away money to other cast members is an unusual thing for an actor to do. It shows that he is willing to sacrifice to make sure that his movies get made and that he recognizes where the talent really lies (Matrix).

Viper, that's all fine and well, but every time you give to charity, you are helping people, sure, but you are also making some crook whos running things even richer. If you really wanna help out, go take some homeless guy to dinner, or help build housing for the poor, or donate food to your local shelter. It makes me sick to think that some of the money that i worked hard for and decided to donate to needy people will wind up in some 'fatcat's pocket. Hmm, I sound a tad mistrustful.

Speed 2's plot, script, etc sucked period. His career would have tanked like Sandra Bullock's if he did it.

That is a nice thing to do though. What a guy.

Thats a good point but I just think that any selfless act a celebrity does these days is respectable.

MoralPanic,
I've spent years living with and taking care of handicapped people.

Why are there so many angry and bitter people in these forums?

Have a good one.
