Kdenlive - can't edit large (90 minute) clip

I want to grab a small section from a movie, but when I place the movie on the time line and play it to find the location I want to cut, it does not actually play in the right time span. The clip takes up 90 minutes of time line, yet plays as if it was only like 5 minutes long, so I only get the first 5 minutes of the movie and can't edit out the parts I want.

Is there a way to make this work? If it matters, the clip is a avi file.
 
It might be something to do with the way its encoded or maybe a bug in kdenlive. I would try using mencoder (command line) with time parameters you found from playing it in a video player, it may take some trial and error.

The mencoder website has lots of examples for just about every use case.
 
hmm never thought of just trying to convert it to another format. I will try that and see what happens.

How do you get the frame rate from a video? Whatever format I convert to I want to make sure I use the same frame rate. In kdenlive it just shows up as "-nan".
 
There was a reencode feature in the library that I never noticed, I tried a few till I got a result that worked. So all is good.
