KDE Doesn't like me

Hey,
I'm trying to make my KDE shinier with transparency/shadows but it doesn't seem to like me. if i use the kwin settings and just hit the check mark and hit apply nothing happens. if i go into console and type in "xcompmgr -c" like the gentoo-wiki page says i get... well picture speaks a thousand words: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v42/GuyFromHellCS/snapshot9.jpg any advice? i'm using kde 3.5.2, xorg-7.0-r1, ati-drivers 8.23.7.
