im a bit confused on this thing.

so if someone has 256/128kbps does it mean that they have 32Kilobytes/16Kilobytes connection?

and also my cable is at somewhere around the ballpark of 2800/300 (line test) or something... does that mean its 300KBps/38KBps?

just a bit confused here...

yep, you got it. course you will never get the rated speed. i have 1.5mbps dsl and i top out at 155KB or 1240kbps
 
it's just weird because my friends and i all always download faster than 300Kilobytes / sec and that would mean our cable is letting us go fsater than 1.5mbps (not complaining) pretty cool!
 
is that a constant speed? cause i know when i start download internet explorer says i am getting 250KB but there is no way in hell i am getting that. after awhile it just keeps on dropping down til it reaches 155 and just stays there.

I never understood why networking was measured in bits instead of bytes. It would be like measuring hard drive space in bits.

i think i can answer that one...

it depends on wether it is megabits or megabytes

i think lowercase is megabits that would mean 1500kilobits

and if its uppercase - megaBYTES = 1500kbytes = 12000kbits?

it depends on wether it is megabits or megabytes

so wouldn't 300 kilobytes be 1/5 of 1.5Mbps? Thus, if you're getting 300kilobytes/s you are only at 1/5 of your 1.5 Mbps connection's potential.
 
big M = mega = 1000
little b = bits = 1 bit
big B = bytes

All network speeds are always measured in bits/second. Little b.

A 1.5 Mbs connection is exactly 1500 million bits/sec.

Internet explorer's speed estimate is not very accurate at all.

yea this is confusing me again haha...

well alot of cable ISPS say 2Mbps does that mean bytes ? or bits? also my roadrunner does not say what their speed is....i checked this other local cable company that sells 2Mbps for $43.00 as oppposed to my RR @ $45.00.

No.

Ethernet connections are rated in megabits as well - 10 or 100 megabits per second. To get the megaBYTES devide by 8.

10mb = 1.25MB
100mb = 12.5MB
1gb = 125MB
 
interesting.....so theoretically my 1.5Mbps connection should top out at 187.5kilobytes....I consistently get faster downloads than this though, so I think that is where I was getting confused.

thats what was kind of confusing me also...cause most ISPS are either at 1.5 or 2Mbps and i always get above 250Kbps so it was confusing me.

Are these on long downloads?

When you click a file to download and the save as dialog pops up, IE is downloading in the background. If you take a while to click Save or Open, the download rate will be greatly skewed. If it's a long download, it should settle in to a certain speed (again, depends on time of day and the site, too)

yes depending on the day/night yes they are long downloads they usually stay above 200 and under 300ish for long downloads.

*not all downloads are this speed just some..

 
cool...then you're above advertised speeds 🙂

That's why I'm switching to cable modem. My ex's dad gets about 3mbps down vs. my 1.2mbps down (if I'm lucky) with DSL.
