<< LONDON (Reuters) - In a setback for efforts to halt copyright abuse, a Dutch appeals court on Thursday told a technology firm it could distribute a software program that is designed to let users share music and films on the Internet.

The ruling in the case between Internet software company KaZaA and Dutch music rights organization Buma Stemra overturned a decision in November in favor of the music industry. >>

Full Story: Dutch Court Clears Web Music Swapping

When I was a kid many movie theatres had a petition to sign regarding the horrors of "pay TV" and how it would end the movie industry as we knew it. Fast forward to 2002 and the movie and entertainment industry is stronger than ever despite the success of HBO, Showtime etc. These idiots in Hollywood are Luddites when it comes to technology and their lack of understanding regarding it.

<< The Amsterdam Court of Justice ruled that KaZaA was not liable for any individuals' abuse of its software, which is being used by millions of people around the world every day to swap copyright-protected games, music, pictures and films. >>

There is a place right down the street from me where I can go borrow copyrighted works for my personal use for 2-3 weeks at a time and I do not pay a cent. Somehow while all this is taking place both the copyright holder and the people distubuting the copyrighted work all make a nice profit. If the printing press was invented in today's climate we would have no public libraries. As it is libraries are worried about some of the implications contained in the DMCA as it currently exists.

You can get books and cds and sometimes movie as well!:Q

BUT -> These item are either paid for or donated (or paid for by donated money).

ANd another thing is they are not distributing COPIES rather they are lending you a Original Piece of work (some thing you can do with anything you own) ANd while they are lending you it they do not have use of it. Where as with file sharing when you download a mp3 the person whom you download it from does not lose the ability to listen to that peice of work.

I am going to LEND my copy of MOHAA to my freind, This is totally legal as long as he doen't make a copy for himself AND I don't have the program running on my system. Bottom line is BOTH of us will be unable to play at the same time.

Copywright owners have a RIGHT to control how their works are distributed. If you obtain a legal copy through the proper channels YOU can lend or give or even sell:Q that peice of work (or the licence to use it) to anyone who can legally own it.

DON'T compare the lending of copyrighted works with the mass distribution of unauthorized copies!

Please don't try to justify the unauthorized duplication of copyrighted works as the Robin Hood of the New Generation. People don't use Kazaa because they feel repressed by THE SYSTEM they use it because they can get the music for free.

I won't demonize people who download illegal music BUT don't try justifing it. You really make yourself look silly!
