kazaa file question

I've got a partial file from kazaa that I'd like to play; it is supposed to be an .avi, but is currently being stored as a .dat because it's unfinished. When I try to preview it in kazaa nothing happens which leads me to think its a codec thing. Would simply renaming it from .dat to .avi be able to play the partial file? Currently when I do that it crashes media player, probably because its over 1/2 gig and I have a weak computer. I'm thinking if this should work then I can split the avi into multiple viewable parts.

Thanks for any help!

9 times out of 10 (if not all 10 times :)), you won't be able to view a partial AVI file.

If it were a partial mpg or Quicktime, then it would work.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure you have to have the whole avi downloaded to view it.

What? You can view it. Just do a search and download divfix.

It rewrites the index and allows it to play.
