On big downloads, I can be zipping along pretty quick at a combined 250k/sec from multiple sources. At about 20MB away from the end, sources start dropping slowing me down to 50k, 20k, and finally 10k :frown: around 10 megs away.

Why does this happen?

Sometimes a download will be downloading from many users at the same time.

As you get nearer to the end of the download some users drop off and your transfer rate decreases.

whoops

I read your post too fast.

Sorry, I do not know the reason they drop off.

Maybe the software is doing it so one person does not hog a user that has good bandwidth.

Lets say you are downloading a 100MB file from 10 people. It will split the file up into 10 segments. The first person will dl the first 10MB, the second person will dl the next 10MB and so on. Once you finish dling one of the 10MB segments from a user it will stop dling from them so your KB/s will go down. Depending on how much you have left it will break it into segments again and start dling from that person again. (at least that's how I think it works :p)
