I've got 250 MB of a 600 MB movie. The guy I was downloading it from logged off.
But that's actually alright. I only need one clip from the movie, and it's in the first little bit of it.
So I need to way to play part of a movie file. I did a search for it and couldn't find it. This confused me. So I went to look in my My Shared Files folder and it turns out Kazaa calls files "download8293823972839278392738926382976941680.dat" until they're actually finished downloading.
I tried to play it with the Kazaa player. No luck. The file says "VHS DIVX[fs]" on it, so I downloaded divx and tried opening it with that. Still no luck. I tried renaming the file "filename.avi" and opening it in divx again, but that didnt work either. Then I realized that I hadn't actually changed the file extension -- damn windows xp! It was still filename.avi.dat. So now Im stuck because I used to use the MS-DOS "rename" function to change file extensions. I can't do that in windows xp.
So, two questions. (a) how do I change file extensions in winxp and (b) if I can get it to .avi instead of .dat, will divx play a half-downloaded avi in the same way that windows media can play a half-downloaded mp3?
Thanks.
