Kazaa, the company behind a popular file-swapping Web site, said it will fold because it cannot afford to defend itself against copyright infringement charges brought by the major studios and labels.

The Dutch company maintains it has not violated any copyright laws by enabling customers to copy and share music and movie files by computer. But Kazaa lawyers said Friday that the firm cannot afford to defend the charges.

"Plaintiffs have engaged in Rambo-style litigation," Kazaa said in a court filing Friday, complaining that the studios and labels are using hardball legal tactics to squash it.

Screw you RIAA!

There are other P2P software.

And there will be others in the future.

But KaZaA worked pretty well. Damn..

The collapse of Kazaa, however, is not expected to slow trading activity on the company's network, one of the most popular file-sharing sites in the world.

It's only a matter of time...

Well.. the P2P clients need to log-in to some server, right? Isn't that how it works?

i think fastrack is the interface you're talking about. they use the same interface but i think p2p programs using this will still be able to survive. anyways, there's still directconnect.

This doesn't mean the end of Kazaa the program because remember Sharman bought Kazaa earlier this year. But the Xolox team is cowering because of this news and will probably throw in the towel (again). Ah well, WinMX 3.1 kicks booty :D

kazaa shot themselves in the foot when they shut off morpheus users from their network.

This is a good example of why the gnutella network is so important. It's an open protocol with universally agreed upon standards, and multiple vendors maintain client programs. The newest clients feature true multi-source downloading.

Yes, you do accept a minor inconvenience for the fact that the network has no central indexing server(s), but it's that much harder to shut the network down (no single target).

Time to get

E-Donkey (great for huge files like movies, whole mp3 albums, iso's, Games, etc.)

Morpheus (better for smaller stuff like single mp3s, ebooks, picz etc. [although it has the big files too!] / part of the gnutella netword [Limewire, etc.])

One more reason why I hate lawyers...and the RIAA

and especially the person that created the W32.benjamin.worm, I picked up that thing off kazaa yesterday just because my dat files were 2 days old

does directconnect work with dynamic ip addresses or do you still have to get a static?

and does the new morpheus still suck?
