smart baserunning by kaz. 2nd basemen should've gone for the 4-6-3 double play or the 4-2-3 double play (tougher because the catcher has to wheel and deal behind the batter running up to first). should not depend on a tag on that play because that'll exactly happen to you, smart by kaz to keep the pickle going long enough also so both runs come in.

1) Mets are playing Diamondbacks. Mets are batting with the bases loaded and one out.
2) Matsui is on first base.
3) Mets batter hits ball to the SS for what look to be a double-play ball.
4) SS throws to first (WTF?) for the first out, and one run scores, but they now have Matsui is a rundown between first and second.
5) Matsui runs back and forth long enough to allow an extra runner to score before being tagged out.

He's lucky he still is on a major league team this year.
In the video he did nothing except what every player does when he gets caught in a rundown.
It was the other team that took its eyes off the runners and allowed them to score.

Then you probably don't watch a lot of baseball.

Everytime I've seen a rundown, the runner has extended it for as long as he can..

Most runners will try to get into a rundown, though.

It was actually both. But nothing uncommon, either.

This was from last August anyway.


Edit: Actually, after watching again, the 2B didn't screw up too badly. There was no way he was going to double up Beltran if he had thrown to second. He might have been smart to just get the force out, though.
