Not too many details though I was fishing about 50yds from him in my kayak when I heard a large splash and a voice calling for 'help' on the vhf. Apparently the shark charged his 16ft kayak and munched the front side leaving tens of slots in his yak. He was immediately thrown off and when I talked with him, he said that he only saw the head of the shark chewing the kayak which was about 3.5-4ft wide. He tried to get back on the kayak twice before thrown off again by the jostling of the yak by the shark. Thankfully, the shark lost its interest in plastic and ventured off. He paddled with a friend of mine back to the beach where we launched while I stayed behind to stow my stuff into my yak before heading back in.

Yeah. He was in great spirits afterwards. Quite an ordeal. Most of us usually stabilize our kayaks out in the ocean in the heavy swells by dangling our feet in the water on each side. I'm glad that none of us got nipped.

Most people don't know that Global Warming has jagged teeth and lasers attached.

I didn't take too many pics. Here's one I took of the kayak with holes on one side. There are a bunch of holes on the other side of the kayak too since the shark had its jaws wrapped around the front end.

No offense, but what kind of morons would kayak in waters known to be inhabited by Great Whites? Common sense would tell me not to do this.
Sorry if that was harsh.

Glad he's ok.

All oceans are 'inhabited' by Great Whites. That doesn't mean that you stop kayaking out there. Attacks on kayaks do happen though they are extremely rare. I've only heard about one other incident that happened here in California about 5 years back and that involved some idiots who came too close to some sharks that were devouring a seal.

Fishing from a kayak sounds pretty daft to me :p

Being a rather avid fisherman, I disagree. I've fished from my little 14 foot jon boat, I've fished from my larger Glastron ski/fish combo boat (Glastron makes a boat that's adapted for both), I've fished from shore, while wading in the water, etc. etc.. And, I've fished from my kayak wondering if it would work. There's nothing more exciting than catching larger fish from a kayak.

For what it's worth, I've been on the ocean a few times. I told my wife that if a shark attacked my kayak and put some teeth marks in it I would get the kayak bronzed and put it on the mantle as a sort of trophy. The worst that's happened at the ocean is my wife's leg was broken by her kayak when it ran over her (she rolled on the way in with 3 foot waves.)

Oh, and if anyone thinks it's really cool to have dolphins swimming next to their big boats while out in the ocean, it's 10x the experience to have a pod of dolphins swimming alongside your kayak close enough for you to touch them.

OP: glad to hear your friend is okay. I'll bet he treasures that kayak forever now. :) What a great story it'll make in bars over a few beers. (Not to mention, he'll probably make money off a few bets with non-believers.) My wife will be relieved; I told her that her blue kayak is more likely to get hit by a shark; that kayak is the color of mine.

I've fished from many small boats, and everything from wading to practically swimming, but i can't imagine much less fun than trying to deal with anything other than a squid jig from a kayak ;)

I'd definitely need a clean pair of undies after that ordeal. Ocean fishing is a whole different beast than freshwater. Worse thing you have to worry about up here is a big old snapping turtle coming up and thinking a dangling toe is dinner.

Yikes! That's definitely one for the story books. Where did this happen at?
